Hello everyone! Kyuusei here to teach you Japanese and show what I find interesting about Japan. With that being said, let’s continue.

日本語のイベント

ゲームが好きだから、自分のゲームを作りたいと思います。それで、日本にゲームカンパニーで勤めるはどうですか。

N3　文法

[決して～ない]

never, by no means

Used to describe a strong sense of forbidding an action or a thing. Usually used with the respective negative form for verbs, adjectives, and nouns.

決して+ Noun + ではない
決して+ Verb-ないform
決して+ いadj (-い) + くない
決して+ なadj + ではない

Ex: 彼は決して怪しい人ではない。

　　(He’s certainly not suspicious.)

Ex: カズコ先生のおかげさまで、日本語を勉強し始めました。先生のことは決して忘れません。

　　(Thanks to Professor Kazuko, I started studying Japanese. I will never forget her.) 

Ex: 決して高くないもの見たことがない。

　　(I’ve never seen something so inexpensive.)

Ex: あの探偵は決して冷静でない。

　　(That detective is never calm.) 

[切る]

to do something completely to the end

Another way to say that something is finished. It’s similar to 終わる/終える, but this means that you are completely finished with something and don’t plan on returning back to do anything else on it.

Verb-ますstem + 切る/切れる

Ex: 同じ意味がある文法がたくさんあって覚え切れるかなあ。

　　(There are so many grammar points that have the same meaning. I hope that I can remember them all.)

Ex: うわーギリギリ合格した。運を使い切ったはずだっけ。

　　(Wow I barely passed. Did I just use up all my luck?)

　agreement; union; match​; coincidence

Ah, if only if that was the case between English and Japanese.

The first kanji simply means one. The only meaning that makes since in this context here for 致 would be cause. So think of it as doing something with “one cause” for some meanings of this verb.

Hikaru is starting to learn how to play shogi when his friend Akari walks in.

[将棋しない？]

A: 何してる？それは将棋じゃないの？

B: ええ、将棋将棋できる?

A: うん。

B: すっげえ。知らなかった。3月のライオン見たばかり、きょうみになったから。

A: いつか、一緒にしない。3段だが、教えてあげる。

B: わー　すごい。いつの間に、将棋をしたか。

A: えっと、2年ぐらい。ネットでする。このボードを買ったばかりので、一緒にしよう。

A: About two years on the internet. I just bought a board so let’s play.

B: Alright. Just don’t go easy on me alright.

2021 Fall Anime Popular Ranking to Decide What’s #1! World Trigger Season 3 Comes in Third!

With the coming of winter, many people maybe spending there time taking it easy and watching anime.

Netorabo did a survey from Nov. 10th to Nov.24th with a question in mind: “What is your favorite Fall 2021 Anime?”.

The survey pulled in a total of 5595 votes. This was a great turn out. Thanks for the votes! Now, let’s take a look at the results.

3rd: World Trigger Season 3

Coming in third: World Trigger Season 3 (520 votes) . To protect humanity from an intergalactic threat called Neighbors, an organization that fights against them called BORDER takes them on in this Sci-Fi action series. BORDER has their own fight amongst themselves in the must see Rank Wars. The manga ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2013 to 2018 and moved to Jump Square afterwards. The series got an anime adaptation in 2014 and the 3rd season started this year in October. It starts out with Hyuse joining Mikumo Squad (aka Tamakumo-2).

2nd: Mushoku Tensei Part 2

In second, Mushoku Tensei Part 2 (591 votes). The novel was serialized by the Web Novel Site “Shousetsuka Ni Narou (Become a Novelist)”. After our protagonist, a 34 year-old NEET, dies he is reincarnated so he can start his life over. As a repentance of his past life he vows to “take this life seriously”. A fantasy story of developing his art in the sword and magic. The first part started airing in January 2021. The second part started October 2021. Due to the Teleport Incident Rudeus and Eris were teleported to the Demon Continent where they have created the party “Dead End” and continue their journey to get back home.

1st: The Vampire Dies in No Time

And last but not least, The Vampire Dies in No Time takes first place (1989 votes). The manga started in Weekly Shonen Champion in 2015. On the outskirts of Inaka Town in Saitama, there lives a terrifying vampire Dralc. However, in actuality, he’s a weakling that quickly dies and turns to dust. Once the vampire slayer (Hunter) named Ronald destroys his castle, Dralc stays with Ronald in New Yokohama City where his Vampire Slayer Office is located. Dralc and Ronald are the center of this gag comedy. It began broadcasting on Tokyo MX in October 2015.

Here are some comments from the article.

tak: There’s a lot of good stuff this season. Personally speaking, Ousama Ranking should be number 1.

uuc: Even though it clearly states that this is a survey that was taken by Netorabo readers, there’s a bunch of complaints. Why not just accept that “This is what’s popular for people who read Netorabo!”. Looks like they won’t be satisfied until there’s a nationwide poll and see that their favorites are on the list.

g_n: The poll was done on the site so of course the results are going to weigh in the favor of those who go there and what they like.

There was a small amount of votes. Plus if you don’t use a title that makes it clear that this is from a Netorabo ranking, then people are going to misunderstand.

syu: This anime season has been excellent overall.

Vampire Dies in No Time sure was popular on this poll.

No. 1 should’ve been Mushoku Tensei 2, right? The food looks so good.

For the Winter season and for the rest of 2022, I hope that the studios do their best.

The vote was very heavily skewed towards Vampire Dies in No Time. Wasn’t expecting it to get that many votes. It would be interesting to see a popularity vote for this season in Japan though. Like how anitrendz have weekly popular rankings for seasonal anime.

Nonetheless, it is fun to see how anime is viewed in Japan in some shape or form.

Unfortunately, Vampire Dies in No Time isn’t doing that well in the US. Maybe due to a different sense of humor? Some jokes are kind of funny but it has kind of gotten old. There’s a character or two that is added each episode to keep things fresh but there’s not much going on. It’s like a weird vampire weekly gag show. And that’s okay. Also John is hands down the best character.

Glad to see World Trigger is doing so well though. I don’t think it gets that much love. Especially since Toei kinda butchered the first season. I’m glad that they went the Studio Bones MHA route with these seasons. Then again Toei is known for their long running shounen shows like Dragonball and One Piece.

Haven’t watched it yet (heck I just finished the 2nd season last week), but I plan on watching it next year for MAL’s Annual Anime Watching Challenge. I’ve been reading the manga ever since they stopped airing the anime. It holds up pretty good and the author Daisuke seems to be doing better. So much better, that he started doing 2 chapters a month instead of one. Just hope he doesn’t go into another hiatus.

Mushoku Tensei Part 2 is as awesome as ever. The protagonist isn’t the best kind of person. He’s not like your typical isekai main character. He’s a degenerate. Hopefully he changes somewhere down the line though. In a way this new life of his is like rehab as well.

　完全（かんぜん）な心（こころ）を作（つく）るにはもうひとつ。。。”ビックリ”が必要（ひつよう）じゃ。

　 こいつのありかは町長（ちょうちょう）が知（し）ってるはずだ。

  • Well done, you’ve brought it.
    • EN: Yes. This is it.
  • Now, there’s only one more thing we need to complete the heart… “Surprise”.
    • EN: Now, just one more ingredient. We need “surprise” to complete the heart.
  • That mayor should know where to find it.
    • EN: The mayor should know where it is.

※ The word ありか is used to describe the location of something. You can use はず to add more certainty to what you are saying. It means something like “should”.

②こころォ？ジャックの野郎が心を作ってだと！？

　そいつぁいい　この俺（おれ）にうってつけだ！

　その心をぶんどれば　俺の手（て）をーー

  • A heart? Jack is trying to make a heart, you say?! 
    • EN: A heart? That bonehead Jack is really making a heart?
  • That’s great. It would fit me like a glove!
    • EN: I’ll be jiggered! That works for me.
  • If I can get my hands on that heart…
    • EN: Ohh, when I get my hands on that…

③いや　心を汚（けが）さずにハートレスをあやつれるってわけだーー！

　そこの墓石（はかせき・ぼせき）から、次々（つぎつぎ）と幽霊（ゆうれい）が現（あらわ）れます。

  • I could control the Heartless without a problem!
    • EN: Well, I’ve got no hands, but I’m still gonna nab that heart and control the heartless.
  • The ghosts will appear one by one from these tombstones.
    • EN: Ghost rise from those tombstones.

※ Wasn’t too sure where to put the いや (which means no, or denying what you said prior) but I do like how they translated it because he doesn’t really have hands XD.

※ This kanji 々 is used as a repeating mark. It came after 次 in the second sentence. Sometimes the wording will change like 時々（ときどき） and other times they will stay the same like with 次々（つぎつぎ）which means something like “one by one” or “one after another”.

④もし順番を間違（まちが）えると。。。”ビックリ”するでしょうな！

　 幽霊が現れた順番（じゅんばん）どおりに墓石を調（しら）べてください。

  • If you get the order wrong… you’ll get a “surprise”!
    • EN: Check the tombstones in the order the ghosts appear.
  • Pay attention to the order they appear.
    • EN: If you get it wrong, you’re in for a surprise!

🎮The surprise = an explosion.

⑤おみごと！ほら、カボチャをごらんなさい。

  • Well done! Now, take look at the pumpkin.
    • EN: Splendid! Now go look at the pumpkin.

⑥ビックリばこを手にいれた！

  • Obtained Jack-in-the-Box!

※ Find it funny they call Jack-in-the-Box ビックリばこ. Literally it means surprise box. Unfortunately, the surprise wears off one you’ve seen it after while.

🎮Poor mushrooms, Paradigm Shifter ignored them. One looked like it was hot.

⑦よしよし、持ってきたか。←　デジャヴだね。

  • Well done, you’ve brought it.
    • EN: Yes, this is it.

⑧今度（こんど）こそ心の完成（かんせい）じゃ！

  • This time I’m sure the heart is complete!
    • EN: There you go. This time it’s sure to work.

🎮Barrel must have a hard head to be able to trip up a wheelchair without getting injured.

⑨やばい　見失（みうしな）った！

  • Oh no, we lost them!
    • EN: We lost them!

※ The verb 見失う comes from the verb to see and to lose. So, basically you are losing sight of something. And Sora and the gang have lost sight of the bratty kids. On another note, I like how they put in a grunt of frustration from Sora instead of translating やばい.

🎮These brats make the Phantom Thieves stealing hearts look like child’s play.

⑩ゼロ　悪（わる）ガキどもを追（お）うんだ！

  • Zero, go after those brats!
    • EN: Zero, after them, quick!

※ The funny thing about ガキども is it could be translated to damn kids but I rather not have Jack sounding like a boomer. Oh right and it’s E for everyone. So, I went with the 悪ガキ (brats) translation instead.

⑪「ブギーの屋敷（やしき）」への道（みち）

  • Path to Boogie’s Mansion
    • EN: Oogie’s Manor

🎮Really like the iconic shot of walking across the sleeping hallow hill. Glad they added it as a cinematic. Boogie’s place is kinda annoying. One wrong move and you fall down and then you have to take a trip back where you were. Then again there is a bath tub that will bring up to a door if you do fall. Nice little assist from the devs.

⑫やっぱりブギーのしわざか！

  • So it was Boogie’s doing!
    • EN: I knew Oogie Boogie was behind this!

※仕業（しわざ） means act or one’s doing. So Jack has confirmed that Boogie is up to something with that heart those kids stole.

⑬「小鬼（こおに）たちの部屋（へや）」への扉

  • Door to Imp’s Room
    • EN: Evil Playroom

※ The word 小鬼 fits these kids perfectly, they’re quite the little（小） demons（鬼） aren’t they.

🎮Time for a little brat beatdown. They are kind of a bother.

⑭あたしたち、命令（めいれい）されてただけ！

  • We were just following orders!

⑮ジャックの計画（けいかく）、ブギーに話（はな）したら、心を横取（よこど）りしろって。。。

  • When we told your plan to Boogie, he told us to snatch the heart.
    • EN: Oogie Boogie told us to steal the heart.

⑯悪いのはバレルよ！

  • Barrel’s did it!
    • EN: It’s all Barrel’s fault!

🎮No honor among these thieves, I see.

⑰バレルが、心のことをブギーに報告（ほうこく）しようって言い出したの！

  • He’s the one that told Boogie about the heart!
    • EN: It was his idea to tell Oogie Boogie about the heart.

⑱うん、そうだそうだ！

  • Yeah, that’s right!

⑲だっ、だって、みんなが。。。

  • B-but you guys were in on it t-
    • EN: B-but you guys said–

※ I went with a trailed off sentence that suggested that they were as much as fault as he was. Whereas the official translation went a different route with their own trail off sentence expressing that the others put Barrel up to it.

⑳言（い）いわけするなんて見（み）そこなったわ！

  • To even come up with an excuse! I misjudged you!
    • EN: You should be ashamed!

※ The verb 言いわけ means excuse or more literally “reason to say”. You can use the word explanation for better understanding.　見そこなった means to overlook or to misjudge. Kudos to the translator for dodging the Japanese altogether and finding a localization that works better here. Shock is expressing that she has misjudged Barrel’s character because he is coming up with an excuse.

They really threw Barrel underneath the bus there. Welp time for the boys to meet Boogie next time.

神（かみ）は

Seeing the word for “God” again this week. Let’s see what they are doing in this breakdown.

サイコロを

サイコロ has an obsolete kanji 骰子 and 賽子. The second kanji is similar which gives off feeling that the item we are talking about is small. As if it was a child.

The first kanji in 骰子 can mean dice or bone. It may have to do with the theory that dice were made from bones. The first kanji for the other reading of dice 賽子, just means dice or die.

Considering there is a を at the end, what will this God be doing with the dice?

振（ふ）らない

This is the negative form for 振る. The kanji can mean shake, wave, wag or swing. So put this with what you usually do with dice and you get the verb “To Shake”. When you add the negative form to it, the verb becomes “doesn’t shake”.

Together it means:

“God Doesn’t Cast The Die”

「未来永劫」（みらい・えいごう）

Don’t know if I ever mentioned this before but the brackets are usually for song names or quotes in a book.

Another thing that I don’t I have mentioned. There are quite a few of these 4 compounded kanji that have their own meaning. It’s called 四字熟語（よじじゅくご）or 4-compound kanji. You can find them in some idioms as well. I talk about my favorite one here.

The best way that I can break down 未来 is looking at the kanji separately. 未 can mean “not yet” or the negative prefix “un-“. The first definition for 来 is next, as in describing time (like week（来週） & year（来年）). Put them together and have something like “the time that is coming next is not yet”. In other words, the time that hasn’t come yet. And that would be the “future”.

For 永劫 we have the first kanji 永 which means long on it’s own. The second kanji 劫, which means eon, which is an indefinite period of time. So together it makes since why it means “eternity”.

So together it would mean “Future Eternity”. But let’s clean that up a bit and make it sound better. An everlasting future. Something that lasts forever. Maybe “Forevermore” would work.

So altogether we have:

There’s no translation for this per say in the ED, but according to an article on Crunchyroll written by Mikikazu Komatsu, the band’s name in English is “God Does Not Roll the Dice” and the song name is “For Eternity“.

忍者になりたいトレーナーは俺に勝負しかけてきた。どんなジムかな。「作戦」をつかうだけど、あいつらは上手じゃない。こいつはポケモンをスイッチして続けてた。いつかしても、結果が変われない。ぶっ飛ばしてやる。ジムリーダーのコがは忍者だ。もう一つのエスパータイプのジムかと思ったが、ほかのタイプがある。じめんタイプとどくタイプなど。

うるさいな人は俺に「透明な壁をむっかつくか」と尋ねた。いや、明らかだった。別の男は俺にコがの家族のことを教えた。忍者家だと？それで、彼は俺の家のことを尋ねた。さ、親父は兵隊、母は看護師だった。キョウショクとソレイユをたくさん使ったね。最後のトレーナーと戦うとき、チョウムを使う。よし、全員倒した。さ、残りはコがだ。

REI’S JOURNAL

Off to Fuschia City to face the Gym Leader. Wait was I supposed to challenge this Gym first? As expected Aki’s been here, too. Hm? The Gym’s floor looks strange. When I looked closer it was a clear wall. So, this place is like a maze. Looks like the Gym leader is in the center. His clothes look cool.

I fought a trainer who wants to be a ninja. What kind of Gym is this? They use “strategy” but they aren’t good at it. This guy kept switching out his Pokemon. No matter how many times you do that it won’t change the result. I’ll beat you. So the Gym Leader Koga is a ninja. Thought that this was another psychic type Gym but some trainers have other Pokemon. Like ground and poison.

One guy asked me if I was frustrated by the “invisible” walls. Nope they’re pretty obvious. Another guy told me that Koga’s family is full of ninja. Then he asked about my own lineage. Not sure but my Dad was in the army and Mom was a nurse. Sure have been using Kyoushoku and Soreiyu a lot in here. I’ll use Choumu for this last trainer. Alright everyone’s taken down. That just leaves Koga.

Hello everyone! Wow this blog is now two years old. Hopefully I’ve improved from my first post. If anything there’s a lot more going on. With that being said, let’s continue.

日本語のイベント

令和１年１２月０１日。LinkedInでブログを書き始めました。今、２年ぶりでした。日本語が少し上手になったらいいですね。今年は日本語でゲームをしたり、本を読んだり、アニメを見始めました。日本語できる人たちも話しました。でも、日本語について、まだまだです。だから、上手になりたいと思います。

最初から、このブログで日本語が少し上手になるでしょうかと思った（笑）。

ともかく、ブログを読む人たちへ、このブログは役に立つかどうかわからないが、読んでくれてありがとうございます。

[かわりに]

instead of, in exchange for

Used to express that an action will be done instead of something else. It can also express that something or someone will be taking the place of something/someone else. むしろ can be used in tandem with this grammar.

Verb[Plain Form] + 代わりに
Noun + の代わりに

Ex: 締め切りを気に病むかわりに、むしろ作品を集中しよう。

　　(Instead of worrying about the deadline, let’s focus on the book.)

Ex: 名探偵代わりに、僕は君の謎を解きます。

　　(I will solve your mystery in the great detective’s stead.)

what is… again?

Used to confirm something that you have forgotten or you are unsure of with another person.

Ex: ゲームストップは何時までやってたっけ？

　　(Until what time is Gamestop open again?)

　　(That is an interesting movie, isn’t it?)

This one’s not that deep. The first kanji 一 means one. While the second kanji 言 can mean word, remark or statement. When used it usually means having a word or talking briefly.

対話

Roommate walks in and his friend is playing a game. The character he’s controlling is beating up other people in the streets and he’s wearing a flashy suit. What the heck is this game?!

[ヤクザ]

A: 何してるの？

B: ゲームをやってる。一緒にやらない？

A: いいよ。ええとー　あの人はヤクザだろ。

B: うん、そうだ。このゲームはGTAとペルソナのゲームプレイに似てる。

A: あ、ほんとうだ。面白そう。それはシリーズから？

B: うん。良かったら、ヤクザ０をプレイする。

A: ０って。。。このシリーズ、ゲームはいくつか？

B: ええと。。。このゲーム前、8ぐらい。

A: たくさんあるだろ。

B: いや、全部面白かったさ。やってみる。

A: うん、やろう。

[Yakuza]

A: What are you doing?

B: Playing a video game. You wanna play?

A: Sure. Uhh- that guy’s a Yakuza member, right?

B: Yep. This game is similar to GTA and Persona’s gameplay.

A: Oh, I can see that. Looks interesting. Is this one from a series?

B: Yeah. I’ll play Yakuza 0 if you want.

A: Wait 0… How many game are in this series?

B: Hmm let’s see… before this one… about 8.

A: That’s a ton of games.

B: Nah, all of them are interesting. You should give it a shot.

A: Sure, I’ll give it a go.

実況から勉強する：キングダムハーツ

More than a month late from Halloween and a few weeks early from Christmas. We have finally arrived at Halloween Town. The Gummi Ship arrives at 3:30. Wonder who (or what) the boys will bump into here.

the nightmare before christmas

 ①おりる前（まえ）から思（おも）ってたけど　なんだかブキミなところだねぇ。。。

　こんなところに住（す）んでいるのは　やっぱりブキミな連中（れんちゅう）なのかな？

  • Was thinking this before we landed but this sure is a eerie place, ain’t it?
    • EN: This sure is a spooky place.
  • Wonder if the people who live here are just as creepy.
    • EN: I’ll bet the people here are scary-lookin’ too.

※ The なーAdj ブキミ＝不気味 means eerie or ominous. Spooky is a great alternative. And Goofy is right on the mark with that feeling because they have landed in (降りた) in Halloween Town.

②平気（へいき）平気！僕（ぼく）たちもブキミなかっこうをしてるんだからー

  • It’s fine! That’s why we’re disguised like this. 
    • EN: Don’t worry. We look spooky, too.

※ This かっこう means appearance or form. When used as a verb it means to take on that form. As you can see the boys have got a design change (probably my most favorite one out of the whole franchise.)

🎮This is probably my most favorite of the design changes for the group.

③相手（あいて）だって僕たちを怖（こわ）がるに決（き）まってるさ。

　そうかなァ。。。

  • I’m sure that we can scare even the Heartless.
    • EN: If they scare us, we’ll scare them right back!
  • I don’t know about that.
    • EN: You think so?

※ The verb 怖がる comes from the adjective 怖い. Yes, adjectives are able to turned into verbs. Japanese, am I right? It simply means to be afraid of, to fear or to dread. Since Donald brought up 相手, I thought he had decided on these disguises to scare there enemies. However, it can also mean “companions” or in other words he wanted to make disguises that would scare his friends, Goofy and Sora.

※ The word 決まって can mean “without fail”, so I went with something that shows that Donald is confident that they are scary.

⑤「ギロチン広場（ひろば）」への門（もん）

　ご紹介（しょうかい）しましょう　我（われ）が街（まち）の主役（しゅやく）にして。恐怖（きょうふ）と悪夢（あくむ）の王ージャック・スケリントン！

  • Gate to Guillotine Square 
    • EN: Guillotine Square
  • Ladies and Gentleman, I introduce you to the lead actor of this town, the king of fear and nightmares – Jack Skellington!
    • EN: And now, allow me to introduce the master of terror, the king of nightmares– Jack Skellington!

※ Adding ご or お to nouns is a form of politeness called keigo. I’m not sure if there is a pattern for when to use either a お or a ご. I think it’s just another one of those things you just have to look out for. Like those いーAdjectives that look なーAdjectives. They worked that in pretty well with the “allow me” part. Depending on who you are talking to, keigo can have you talking up to someone who is higher than you. Keigo can also be used to talk down to others.

※ The mayor here has quite the confidence in Jacks performance. He’s saying that the 見世物 (show; spectacle; exhibition) will be unprecedented (今までにない). 今まで by itself means till now but when you add にない to that it takes on a negative sense. Which makes it something like “Never done until now”. ぞーッと means to scare. From what I’ve found, it’s usually put with する and くる.

🎮I find it weird that in the JP version, they know what the Heartless are. Heck they even know the name. How? Regardless of that, I’m glad the EN version kept had them seem more out of the loop with what these things are. Besides they do look like ghosts. On another note, the ghost Heartless look more suited to this world than Atlantica.

⑦身（み）も凍（こお）るほどの恐怖が欲（ほ）しいんだ！フィンケルスタイン博士（はかせ）のところへ行（い）ってくる。

🎮I did find it strange in this world the Heartless are kinda chill at first. Wonder how they got like that. Perhaps Oogie Boogie but then again he’s a weak sack of bugs. Other than that, in the JP version they had the mayor scream. In the EN version a weird noise occurred.

⑧「研究所（けんきゅうしょ・けんきゅうじょ）前」への扉（とびら）

🎮Annnd I take back what I said about them not knowing what the Heartless are. I am curious how all worlds reacted to the Heartless first appearing.

　心なんて　そう複雑（ふくざつ）な仕組（しく）みではないじゃろ。さっそく作（つく）ってやろう。

🎮Wait… not only is a heart no big deal for Dr. Finkelstein, is he the one making these kind of Heartless. Kind of strange since they showed up in Atlantica as well. Then again there are some synthetic Heartless as well. Just not sure why someone would want to make them even as a study reference. Just capture an actual one.

※The word まとめる literally means “put it all together” but I like how they turned this into a cooking scenario. The みよう is the volitional form of みる. Volitional form is used to invite people to do something. It’s usually translated to “Let’s (do said verb)”. This version of みる doesn’t mean to see. When it is put together with a てーForm verb it means to try to do that verb.

⑲サリー！サリー！！どこへ行ったんだ！わしが作ってやった恩（おん）も忘れおって！

　”記憶”はサリーのやつが持っとる。サリーを探（さが）してきて。

第一話（だい・いち・わ）

The first kanji 第 is usually set as prefix for ordinal numbers. Think 第一（first） or 第二（second） or 第三（third）. The 話 at the end is used as a counter for stories or episodes. Things like that. Considering this is a manga, I’ll go with “Chapter Ⅰ”. Instead of 1, I’ll go with the roman numeral “Ⅰ”.

調子（ちょうし）に乗（の）るな

調子 can mean many things: condition, mood, tune, spur of the moment, and even trend. But let’s look at the rest of the phrase.

The に here is a direction particle. The verb 乗る can mean many things as well: to get on (like riding a vehicle), to follow, to be carried, etc. However the best fit for this would be “To be carried”. I don’t think this is “to be carried” as in something you carry. It is more like to be carried away.

Which brings us back to 調子 and the phrase in itself. It means to be carried away by the moment or the mood. Or in other words “getting carried away”. The な at the end is the imperative negative form of this verb 乗る. It’s a rather crude and cut to the point way of talking to someone. I like to equate to a drill sergeant quite a bit.

So this part is saying “Don’t get carried away” or something like “Don’t push your luck”. To add a little spice, I’ll go with the latter.

と

This particle can mean “and” it could also be setting us up for a quote. As we can see from the word 言った, it is most likely the latter: a quote or a statement.

神（かみ）は

神 simply means “God”. To make this more interesting, I’ll go into more detail.

In Japan, there are many kami in the religion called Shinto.

  2. 天津神（Heavenly Gods）- The immortal Gods who live in 高天原 or the High Heavenly Plains.
  3. 国津神 （Earthly Gods）- Mortal Gods.

言（い）った

Our last word is the past tense verb for “To say”. So it’ll be turned to the past tense “said”. Considering we are dealing with a quote, our final translation will be:

The 章 part just means chapter. So we’ll be going with Chapter Ⅰ here.

王都（おうと）

The first kanji means “king”. And the second kanji can mean “city”, “metropolis (like Tokyo)”, or capital. Together the word mean “Royal Capital”.

の

Looks like it would be a possessive particle. It’ll most likely be left out of the translation. If I leave it in and connect to the next word, it’ll become something like “Royal Capital’s Day” or “Day of Royal Capital”. That doesn’t make any sense, so omitted.

一日（いちにち）

This one word has quite a few meanings: all day, first day (of the month), throughout the day. I’ll keep it simple and keep it as “a day”. Especially considering the plot of this whole 2 volume series happens in one day.

編（へん）

This is usually translated to part. It comes up quite often in Detective Conan. 前編 (Part One) and 後編 (Part Two). I could translate this altogether as “Chapter 1: A Day in the Royal Capital – Part”. However, I’ll leave “part” out.

Nice. This title comes from the first chapter of the manga Re:ゼロから始める異世界生活 or better known as Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World-.

Just finished the last chapter Saturday morning. These two volumes tells the tale of Subaru’s encounter with Emilia and getting her insignia back. I comment on all the chapters here (mostly in English). Overall, it was a very good read. I just wish the pages didn’t look so bad on Book☆Walker (even though I bought it T_T ). If the text was a bit bigger and crisper I would have less of a problem. Oh well. 8/10.

Emilia’s expression is hilarious XD.

Fought a trainer that could read my mind, but his Slowbro couldn’t dodge Inazuma’s thunderbolt, so I won. I beat another ghost type trainer. Alright, I think that’s the last trainer. Now I have to find Sabrina. Don’t really understand the pattern, but I’ll get to her eventually.

Alright, I’m here. So she was born an Esper. That’s kinda cool. Soreiyu took out her Abra with Earthquake. She keeps using X Defend. That’s ticking me off. Her Pokemon seem stronger than mine but I think we can do it. Kadabra’s Recovery move was so annoying. Almost killed Kyoushoku in one move. Luckily, I have hyper potions. Her final Pokemon, Alakazam.

Kyoushoku froze it with Ice Beam. Just in case it breaks out, I’ll switch with Choumu and use Flash. Then I switched back to Kyoushoku. Wait… it’s still frozen… what the heck XD. Even the Skull Bash couldn’t break the ice. I won! Sabrina’s as shocked as I am. She gave me the Marsh Badge and TM 46 Psywave. So everyone has psychic abilities. Cool I didn’t know that. Hopefully she can dethaw the Alakazam popsicle I made. Don’t wanna use the panels again so I’ll use an escape rope. You know since I don’t know how to use those “psychic abilities”.

心を読めるトレーナーと戦ったけど、あいつのヤドランはイナズマの１０万ボルトを外してできなかったから、勝ちだった。もう一人のゴーストタイプトレーナーを倒した。よし、最後のトレーナーらしいだった。さって、ナツメはどこだ？パターンさっぱりわかないから、ナツメにそろそろ行く。

よし、着いた。あ、生まれた時、ナツメはエスパーだった。カッコイイ。ソレイユのじしんのおかげ、ケーシィを倒した。ったく、ナツメはディフェンダーを使って続けてた。ムカつく。あいつのポケモンは強そうだが、俺たちなら、できる。ユンゲラーのじこさいせいの技もイライラしてた。あのやつはキョウショクを一発でもうすぐ殺した。すごいキズグスリが持ってきてよかったなあ。最後のポケモンはフーディン。

キョウショクのれいとうビームがあいつを凍った。一応で、チョウムのフラシュを頼った。それで、キョウショクに入れ替わって、ロケットずつきを使ったくせに、ユンゲラー・アイスを壊してできなかった。なにそれ。俺の勝ちだ！僕よりも、ナツメは驚いた。ゴールドバッジとTM４６のサイコウェーブ手に入れた。あ、そうか。みんなはエスパー能力がある。知らなかった。さ、ナツメ、そのエスパーパワーでユンゲラーのアイスを解凍して楽しみに。あのパネルを使いたくないから、あなぬけのヒモを使う。俺はエスパーの能力を使い方がわからないさ。

There are two ways to use this. On one hand, you can use it to add to a topic that relates to the main point. On the other hand, you can change the current topic and do a comparison on different subjects.

[かける・かけの]

half-, not yet finished

When you drop the ます form on a verb and add かける or かけの, that means you are doing that action half way.

Verb-ますstem + かける/かけの

Ex: そのマンガはまだ読みかけですか？

　　(You haven’t finished that manga yet?)

Ex: 日本語映画を見たら、分りかけだった。

　　(I understood half of the movie when I watched it in Japanese.) 

Ex: シャワーを浴びかけた時くせに、誰かドアがノックした。

　　(Someone knocked at the door when I was about to take a shower.)

Ex: げーなんで食べかけの食べ物ここに置いた。

　　(Ugh… why did you leave half eaten food here?) 

N3　動詞

外す

はずす

to remove; to undo; to drop; to miss

The kanji 外 can mean things like outside or some other place. In other words it is something that is removed or far away. The verb “to miss” can also work with this in mind. Let’s say you were trying to hit a target… and you miss it. You were trying to shoot it but you were “far” from hitting the target.

There is also another word that this kanji is associated with: 外人 or foreigner. In a more archaic meaning of the word it means outsider. With that in mind there is a thought of “inside” and “outside” in several cultures. When there is an outsider, they may not be trusted as much or even be excluded.

対話

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are out. But what do these two think about it before they buy the game?

A: Really. I can’t believe they’d do that to Dawn and Lucas. You’re joking, right?

『ポケモン ダイパリメイク』で「たんパンこぞうのユウタ」がナーフ！原作で“最難関”と恐れられた存在

※In the Japanese version of the game The trainer is called たんパンこぞうのユウタ or “Shorts Youngster Yuuta”. I’ll be changing his name to the English version in this article and the comments below.

Youngster Tristan gets nerfed in the Pokémon Remake! The “hardest hurdle” Trainers Feared in the Original

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have been finally released. The remakes are keep the same charm while bringing the games into the present day.

This trainer, Youngster Tristan gave players quite the trouble in the original game. It became a huge topic about him being the strongest one part of the game. But has that changed in the remake.

◆Yuuta Learned Mercy!

Youngster Tristan is known for sending out level 5 Starly. Starly’s move set Tackle, Growl, and Quick Attack made it a tough fight to win with our only Pokémon being at level 5.

As you may have guessed, the remake has made this trainer weaker.

Yuuta’s Starly’s move set is the same, but when it’s HP drops, it will use Growl up to two times. To put it short, this was put in place to go a little easier on the player. It’s not definite, but it’s been verified 5 times and the result has been the same.

And as expected, if too many turns go by, Yuuta will get impatient and start attacking. But Yuuta will have a pattern where he’ll wait and not attack. He sure has become merciful.

And the player gets some buffs, too. Your starter Pokémon will be able to obtain their respective elemental type move (such as water gun for Piplup) at level 6, making it even more easier to win.

As long as you don’t avoid battles before facing off with Yuuta, It’ll be easy to get enough experience points to reach level 6.

So with that, the first big obstacle on your Pokémon journey, Yuuta, has been properly adjusted. Perhaps now speed runners can have some peace of mind when it comes to RTA.

Ooh, two videos this week. The boys (and girl) are facing off with Ursula.

Let’s wrap this world up by taking the sea witch down and getting the trident back.

（Will only be doing translations for locations we haven’t seen previously for these videos.）

    • EN: Triton’s Palace

※ The word 出番 means “one turn”. So Sebastian is asking if it’s his time to shine. And it is. Because we simply can’t just destroy the ship or the rock. Or use the Keyblade to push the button. Gotta make Sebastian feel useful right 😉

②「潮（しお）の魔窟（まくつ）」への入口（いりぐち）

　「潮の深淵（しんえん）」へ

※ The word 潮 can mean “tide”, “sea water”, or “opportunity”. Thought I’d go with Sea’s Abyss here. Tidal works better though.

※ The め at the end here is sometimes translated to “damn”, which would make it “you damn witch” here. There are also times when it is left out. It is a suffix of anger when attached to a noun or another person’s name (which I used in last week’s Rei’s Journal). 

④私たちが相手だ！

　 お　おぼえておいで！

  • We’ll face you!
    • EN: Your time has come!
  • I’ll get you for this!
    • EN: You’ll pay for this!

※ The word 相手 can mean companion or partner. But it can also mean “opponent” in a match or a fight. Safe to say what this one is.

🎮Donald and Sebastian talked all that noise and then they got scared. I’ll be honest, when I first played this game, I don’t think I ever really cast magic on the cauldron. Left that up to Donald or one of my spells hit on accident. Pretty annoying fight (especially that laugh). Plus Flotsam and Jetsam make even worse.

※ This classic line “おぼえておいで” or “おぼえてるよ” is literally “I’ll remember this”. This type of remembering is remembering the past. So, Ursula is remembering this defeat (and Flotsam and Jetsam being killed) and has decided to harbor this hatred to seek revenge. And that is the reason why it is usually translated to “I’ll make you pay for this” or something like that.

⑤トライデントを取り返（とりかえ）さないと！急（いそ）いで、後（あと）を追（お）いましょう。

　共有（きょうゆう）アビリティ✨マーメイドキックを手にいれた！

  • We have to get the trident back! Let’s go after her now!
    • EN: Let’s go. We must get the trident back.
  • Gained the shared ability ✨Maid Kick!
    • EN: Learned shared ability ✨Mermaid Kick.

※ When you put a negative verb and ないと together it means “must” or “have to”. I think the と stems from if you don’t do it (the verb) then something bad will happen so you need to do it. Ex: 食べるー＞食べないー＞食べないとー＞”must eat”

⑥このアビリティを装備（そうび）して、Ⓧを連打（れんだ）すると高速（こうそく）で泳（およ）いで逆流（ぎゃくりゅう）もさかのぼれます。

  • By equipping this ability, when you mash Ⓧ you can even swim up strong currents.
    • EN: To swim faster or against currents, equip this and press ◎ repeatedly.

※ The potential verb さかのぼれます that I explained back in a タイトルを見る it can mean two things:

1. To go upstream (such as a river). 

2. To go back in time. 

It is taking the potential form of the verb さかのぼる so it means that with this ability we can go upstream.

On another note, I find it funny that the button mapping is different.

🎮Mermaid Kick sounds like a move from a Kamen TV show.

※ The verb 属する in this context means “to belong to” or she is saying it everything has come under her control. 伏す is a verb that means “to bow”.

🎮Ursula’s quite the annoying boss. She shoot rays out her mouth, zaps you with lightning (which is not a good idea since we’re under da sea.) , and tries to eat you. Well her reign was shortly lived. Speaking of live, they really didn’t follow the movie that much but we get more into that in KH II. With that in mind I kinda see why they made KH I have places you could explore and fight.

※ Sora’s actually asking for Triton not to get too angry with her but I thought this would I’d try to go with something else. 怒る means “to get angry “.

  • Yes, I know. You got carried away by Ursula’s words.

    • EN: I wouldn’t let you follow your heart.

※ Their translocation is a better fit here. おさえつけよう is an expression that means “to put down” or “to suppress”. Triton has been controlling Ariel’s life and also what she wants to do.

⑪おまえが水晶（すいしょう）を見（み）つけた時（とき）もわしはつい、とりみだしてうちくだいてしまった。

　 そうそう、水晶！なんでこわしたの？

  • When you found the crystal, I lost my composure and smashed it to pieces.
    • EN: And when you found that crystal, I lost my temper and destroyed it.
  • Oh, that’s right the crystal! Why’d ya break it?
    • EN: Oh, yeah, the crystal! Why did you destroy it?

※ The verb 取り乱す means “to get upset” or “lose one’s composure”. So Triton saying losing his temper here is great.

  • The keyhole is far too dangerous. So I didn’t want you anywhere near it.
    • EN: The Keyhole is dangerous. I had to keep you away from it any cost.

※ The translation for that was less vague than telling Ariel it’s where she plays. Especially since she’s every where. Then again that’s the only place that comes to mind when he’s talking about the crystal can be replaced with the trident to reveal the Keyhole.

🎮Considering the Keyblade has a crab as the edges, I think they did a good job with this name.

Alright. We got a new Keyblade and Ariel’s feelings to see a new world are as strong as ever. Speaking of new worlds it’s time for us to get out of the sea and back on the Gummi ship. Nothing can be scary than being swallowed by a whale or fighting a shark, right… right O_O?!

旭川第七師団潜入大作戦!!

旭川（あさひがわ）

This word is a location of the second largest city in Hokkaido. It is called Asahikawa.

第七（だいなな）

第 is the prefix for ordinal numbers. It’s like putting a th or st on a number. The second kanji is 七, which means 7. Together this means 7th.

師団（しだん）

The first kanji can mean master, religious leader, specialist. They also have a historical meaning for a Zhou-dynasty army. The second kanji should be quite familiar if you play Pokemon ロケット団(Team Rocket) or Edogawa Ranpo’s 少年探偵団 (Detective Boys). This kanji is used to mark a group or a team. Altogether, the word means a division in a army.

This title is talking about the 7th division of some army in Asahikawa. We will find out what is happening with this 7th Army Division and what someone is doing in this city soon.

For now we can put this as 7th Division of Asahikawa or Asahikawa 7th Division.

潜入（せんにゅう）

The first kanji carries the meaning of conceal, submerge, or lowering a voice. Sounds like something is being done in secret or being hidden. The second kanji means to enter. So together it means to enter somewhere in secret without certain people knowing about it. In other words, an infiltration.

大作戦（だいさくせん）

作戦 by itself means to come up with a plan. A strategy to overcome a goal. The 大 at the beginning of the word means big. You wouldn’t be wrong thinking that this makes this plan seem like it is on a grander scale. And considering we are talking about an army infiltration of a large city, that sounds like it needs to be a big plan.

The true definition for this word is large-scale plan. But that seems a bit too wordy. And surely there has to be better synonym for big, so I’ll go with major.

Altogether, I have:

“Major Infiltration Plan of the Asahikawa 7th Division!!”

This title comes from the last episode of Golden Kamuy Season 2. Even though this and the first season came out in 2018, I started watching this series last year. And it doesn’t disappoint. I thought it couldn’t get any better but as the story progresses, the characters interactions and what they get up to just kept exceeding expectation.

The story follows a man named “Immortal Sugimoto” and an Ainu girl named Asirpa. These two with a band of very odd (that’s putting it lightly) characters are on the search for gold. In order for them to find this gold, they need a map. Unfortunately the map is on the skin of 6 inmates. The mastermind of this whole thing? Asirpa’s father.

So, Sugimoto has a fateful encounter with her and decides to help her find this gold that belongs to her people and find her father. But alas, this is gold we’re talking about. There are many others out to get it by “any” means necessary.

There is a third season, so I might start watching that next month because that last episode made quite the turning point.

レイの日記

とりあえず、左のジムに行こう。あ、道場か。格闘タイプポケモンいるはずだから、ハヤッタカのドリルくちばし頼っておく。やはり、ドリルくちばしが一発ケーオー。早すぎて、相手の出番が来なかった。彼はポケモンにあげるが、いらない。とりあえず、そこに置く。

さ、次のジム。あれ、サインがある。ナツメ：「エスパー少女」か。イッコケセイに頼まれないらしい。殺してしまった。さすが、ワープパネルもある。わい～。ちぇーまた試行錯誤かよ。イナズマはトレーナーの水タイプポケモン簡単に倒した。そうか。このシティはジムが二つあったが、このエスパータイプのジムが引きついた。さすが、エスパータイプのポケモン。

キョウショクのれいとうビームでユンゲラーを凍えて、ロケットずつきで壊した。ほかの奴見たことないポケモンがいた。バリヤードというポケモン。ピエロみたい。なんかキモイ。ちょっと。。。なぜ水タイプとゴーストタイプのポケモンがいる。エスパータイプのジムだろ？俺を倒したら、悪い決意だな。

REI’S JOURNAL

I’ll go to the left one first. Oh it’s a dojo. Must have a bunch of fighting type Pokemon, so I’m sure Hayattaka’s Drill Peck can take care of this place. Hayattaka’s Drill Peck was a one-hit KO. He was so fast the opponent didn’t get to fight. He’s offering a Pokemon to me but I don’t want it. I’ll just leave it there for now. Alright, off to the real gym.

Oh there’s a sign. Sabrina: Master of Psychic Pokemon, huh. Guess I can’t rely on Ikkokessei here. She’ll end up dead. Oh great they have warp panels here, too. Time for trial and error again. Inazuma beat this trainer’s water type Pokemon with ease. So there were two gyms in this city but this psychic gym took over. As expected.

Kyoushoku froze a Kadabra with Ice Beam, and smashed it with a Skull Bash. This one guy had a Pokemon I’ve never seen before. It was called Mr. Mime. Looks like a clown so it was sorta creepy. Why does a psychic type gym have water and ghost type trainers? Kind of a bad decision.

In conclusion, I hope that this series is helpful with your journey to learning Japanese and/or taking an interest in the country’s culture. Until then… また来週！

日本語のイベント

小さい頃、ワンピースを見始めました。珍しくて魅力なストーリ、カッコイイキャラクター、楽しそう冒険だと思っています。残念ながら、４Kidsのバージョンを見始めました。このバージョン終わったとき、このシリーズを忘れてしまいました。

高校生の時に、Funimationの英語ダブを見て、このシリーズ思い出した。最初から見始めました。４Kidsのバージョン比べて、OPがいいですよ。

４Kidsのバージョン比べて、すごく違いますが、もっと面白かっただと思います。しかし、エピソードがあんまり発表しませんでした。

ドレスローザもう終わったみたい。すごい～

大学生ころ、まだ英語ダブアニメを見ました。日本語、英語の字幕でアニメを見たくなかったです。そして、待ちくたびれました、もう一度ワンピース最初から見始めました。日本語、英語の字幕で。２年ぐらいかかりましたが、最近のエピソードをキャッチアップしました。今、毎週、Crunchyrollでワンピースを見ます。実は、最近、日本語でマンガを読むだから、僕はワンピースのマンガを読みたくになるかも知りません。

[いくら～ても]

no matter how

いくら by itself means “how much” and ても is used to say even if. It’s used to express that no matter of the condition, situation or state of something, something will still occur. It’s usually used of things that have already happened. 

いくら + Verb[てform] + も
いくら + Noun + でも
いくら + いadj (drop い) + くても
いくら + なadj + でも

Ex: いくら忘れても、毎日少しずつ頑張れば、大丈夫。

　　(No matter how much you forget, if you do your best every day, you’ll be fine.)

Ex: いくら喧嘩でも、誤って法がいいよ。

　　(No matter how much you argue, it’s best to apologize.)

Ex: いくら長くても、最後までワンピースを見る。

　　(No matter how long it is, I’ll watch One Piece to the very end.)

Ex: いくら便利でも、ネットを使ったばかりってダメよ。

　　(No matter how convenient it is, you shouldn’t be using the internet a bunch.)

[一方だ]

Expresses something that progresses continuously. It can express good and bad situations. It is similar to ばかりだ but you can only use it in a negative situation. On the other hand, 一方だ is mainly used for negative situations, but can be used in a positive or neutral situation.

Ex: ここ３年、日本語能力が増える一方だ。

　　(For the past 3 years, my Japanese ability has continued to increase.)

To Invent

The closest meaning for the first kanji 発 would be publish or emit. Gives off a feeling that you are putting something out to the public. The second kanji means bright or light. So in a way you are bringing what you created to light.

One Piece is getting a live action from Netflix. Hope it’s not another Death Note.

A: I think Cowboy Bebop was good. When One Piece comes out, wanna watch it.

B: Fine, I’ll give it a shot. Let’s see what they plan to do with the Devil Fruit Powers, hopefully CG isn’t too bad.

A: Right. Wonder which arc they’ll do.

B: Not sure. Maybe a short one. Like Romance Dawn. This is a movie, right?

A: Hold on. I’ll check on my phone. Oh, it looks like there’s going to be 10 episodes.

B: Hmm. Interesting. I might check it out.

A: Yeah, I’m really looking forward to it.

※ The word かくれが is usually written in kanji （隠れ家）. It literally hidden（隠れ） house（家）. The word itself means hideout or refuge.

②「アリエルのかくれが」への扉（とびら）

※ I translated 外の世界 (which means outside world) to surface since Ariel got this stuff from there. It’s a different world for her so it makes since that she would describe in this way in Japanese.

③私ね、いつかこの海（うみ）の外に出（で）たい。

　 もっと広（ひろ）い世界を見たいの。そういうのって、変（へん）かな。。。？

　いや、そんなことない、そんなことないよ。

※ When the potential verb 使える is put with そうだ, it gives off a meaning of “it seems it can be used” or 使えそう. Also, in this situation, when dealing with そうだ you have to drop the る.

※ The phrase 今に見ていろ is quite the villain-esque thing to say. It means “Just you wait” or “You’ll pay for this”. いまいましい （忌々しい）means annoying or provoking which shows her grudge with King Triton. よどみ is a noun that means stagnation, backwater, or sediment. It also has a verb called 淀む（よどむ）which means “to stagnate”. So I went with a variation: stagnant.

※ 不慣れな is an adjective that means inexperienced. I like how they expressed their inexperience with moving around in these bodies.

　 異（こと）なる世界に属（ぞく）する者はたがいに干渉（かんしょう）してはならない。属するもの

　そんなの知ってるよ！だけどー－

  • If you really are the wielder of the “key” then you should know.
    • EN: As the key bearer, you must already know…
  • You aren’t supposed to interfere with the people in other worlds.

※ The verb 属する means “to be affiliated” or “to belong to” or “to be subject to”. I went a more expressive translation for Sora instead of just trailing off with “But…”.

🎮 Sora has been breaking that rule for quite a bit now. Besides it seems these worlds need to be interfered with considering there are villains out there doing the same. Kinda like a fight fire with fire deal. Except Sora is like a firewall(?).

⑭おまえたちはそのルールを破（やぶ）ろうとしている。

　”鍵”を持つ者は平和（へいわ）を乱（みだ）し災いを招く（わざわいをまねく）

　 ソラはそんなことしないよ。

  • So you are aware that you are breaking that rule.
    • EN: You have violated this principle.
  • The “key” wielder disturbs the peace and brings calamity.
    • EN: The key bearer shatters peace and brings run.
  • Sora wouldn’t do that.
    • EN: Aw, Sora’s not like that.

※ This expression 災いを招く means”to bring calamity”. 災い means disaster or calamity while 招く means to invite. So Triton is saying that the key brings disaster.

　だがわしの海にその”鍵”は必要（ひつよう）ない。

  • I’m grateful for you helping Ariel.
    • EN: I thank you for saving my daughter.

※ The word 内緒 has the kanji for inside and the second kanji can mean things like cord or inception. To me, it gives off a feeling of being in the loop. So something is being kept from people out of this loop. Hence, a secret.

🎮Why did Triton think it was good idea to leave this thing behind. I’d have it on me at all times like my life depended on it. Because it kind of does if the trident gets in the wrong hands.

㉒「宮殿：トリトンの間（ま）」へ

※ The word ツボ means pot. However in this situation cauldron works better considering Ursula is a sea witch and she does magic. For 引き出し, I went with pull but it can also mean to draw from.

　あやつのツボを魔法（まほう）で攻撃するのだ。

　たたいたら口を開（ひら）くかな？

  • Your attacks will not work on her.
    • EN: (N/A)
  • You have to attack the pot with magic.
    • EN: To defeat Ursula, you must strike her cauldron with magic.
  • I wonder if I hit it, will it open?
    • EN: Hitting it might open it.

※ The verb 通用する means to pass as. However when you put the negative form せん instead する, It means the same as 通用しない which means “to not apply”. せん is an expression that you can use to say “will not do”, “do not”, or “does not”. So Triton is saying that “physical attacks do not apply to her” or “will not work on her” as I suggested here.

※On another note I find it strange they didn’t translate that line. I guess they had a character limit or thought that it wasn’t needed.

That wraps up this heavy dialogue video. But we are not done with this world yet. It’s not over until Ursula is defeated. And we’ll be getting to that next time.

圧倒的戦力！麦わらの一味集結

圧倒的（あっとうてき）

圧倒 is noun that can be turned into a verb. It means to overwhelm, overpower, or intimidate. 的 can be used as a suffix to mean something is like (for example-ish, -kind of ) but I won’t translate it like that. I’ll just stick to something like “overwhelming” or “overpowering”.

戦力（せんりょく）

戦 is tied to the word 戦争 which means war and it has the same meaning by itself. When a kanji is put with 力（りょく）it means the strength of that kanji 力 is being attached to. Maybe something like “fighting power” or just “power” or “forces” would fit better here.

Put this with 圧倒的 and we have “Overwhelming Forces!”

麦わらの（むぎわらの）

麦わら is a noun that means “straw” but in One Piece this is usually translated to “Straw Hat”. The の is most likely used as a way to describe someone or something.

一味（いちみ）

This reading of 味 is used for counters of various types of things. Like food and drink. It most likely can also be used as a counter for groups. And the definition seems to follow the same line of thought. 一味 can mean things like clan, gang, or crew. The last one is perfect for this pirate crew. “Straw Hat Crew” or “Straw Hat Pirates” would be good here.

Put this with what we have so far and we have: “Overwhelming Forces! Straw Hat Crew”

集結（しゅうけつ）

The first kanji shows up in the verb “to gather” called 集まる. So we have a gathering of some sorts. The second kanji 結 can mean bind, organize, or join. Considering what the rest of the title is talking about it is safe to say that an army is gathering together. With that line of thought in mind, let’s look at the definition of this word. 集結 means “gathering” or “massing(of troops)”. It’s kinda like that scene in End Game where Captain America tells the Avengers to assemble so I think I’ll go with that. Perfect.

“Overwhelming Forces! The Straw Hat Crew Assembles!”

One Piece was the first series I started with in this segment, so I thought it would be suitable to return for the 1000th episode.

Crunchyroll did a lot of promotion for this one. They even made a 1 – second per episode video.

Plus One Piece is a very popular anime globally. So, of course it ended up crashing the servers XD. Luckily I did the same thing when Crunchyroll was airing Dragon Ball Super and One Piece around the same time: watched on Funimation. Ah, we made it to the 1000th episode. I’ll talk about a few highlights from the episode.

They brought back 「We Are!」 with new visuals.

They even brought the classic eyecatchers back.

This is special occasion so I don’t think they’ll be doing this going forward. However, it was a fantastic little nod to the classic. To be frank, I wouldn’t mind if they brought back 「We Are!!」for the next OP. I’d still understand if they just wanted to do it for a special occasion.

And speaking of special occasions God Usopp decided to break the 4th wall a little.

They showed off some great moments from each of the Straw Hat Pirates and letting the whole crew show how they’ve grown all these years. Thought they’d go in order from when they all joined but oh well.

We also got a thank you from the staff.

やれやれ、またあいつらか。どけー、ボケ。3匹しかいなかった。なぜ一緒に戦うかな？ともかく、サカキの出番だ。前哨戦ありがとうな。

ハヤッタカはニドリーノを倒した。ハヤッタカのつつくはドリルくちばしにアップした。次はペルシアン。キョウショクのれいとうビームでサイホーンを倒られた。最後のはニドクイン。イッコケセイ、本物のクインを見せてやる。優しかった思った。エフェクトガードを使って続けた場ありが、足りなかったさ。

サカキの負け後、あいつが逃げられた。シルフカンパニーの会長のお礼で、特別ポケボール手に入れた。何もポケモンを必ず掴めるポケボール。マスターボールという。多分絶対に使わないかも。おそらく。。。これも売らない。後で、パソコンに入ってるから。ほかのバリケードを開けて。カードキーを持ち続ける。それもマスターボールもパソコンに入ってる。俺比べて、おそらくアキのやつはバッジの数が多いだね。だから、このシティのジムに行く。って。。。なぜジムが二つあるか？

Aw man, these guys again. Get outta my way ya stooges. They only had 3 Pokémon. Wonder why they fight together. Anyways, Giovanni’s next. Thanks for the warm-up.

Hayattaka took down his Nidorino. Upgraded Hayattaka’s peck to a drill peck. Took down Persian next. Kyoushoku took down Rhyhorn with an Ice Beam. His last was a Nidoqueen?! I’ll let Ikkokesei take of her. Easier than I thought. He kept using guard spec., but it wasn’t enough.

After beating Giovanni, he left. As thanks, the president of Silph Co. gave me a special pokéball. A pokéball that can catch any Pokémon without fail. A master ball. Probably never going to use this. Most likely can’t sell this. I’ll put it in the computer later. Unlocked the rest of the barricades. Guess I’ll hold on this card key. I’ll put that and the master ball in the PC. Aki’s most likely have more badges than me so I’ll on the gym here. Wait… why’s there two?

日本語のイベント

三ヶ月前、サイトを見つけた。Learn Natively といいます。このサイトで読書力を見えます。たとえば、今年に本を読み出しました。「魔女が通る」０巻を読みました。ほとんどわかりましたけど、少し難しかった消す。この本のレベルは２２です。そんなレベルはJLPTN3のレベルはずです。

今、回答レッドを読んでいます。そんな本のレベルは２５です。？？もあります。魔女が通る比べて、怪盗レッドのほうが優しいと思います。その？？は少し不明なレベルかもしりません。それで、怪盗と名探偵の話のほうが好きだから、バイアスがあるかも知りません。

このサイトで、色んな本があるので、サイトを見てください。

the more, to the extent that, so much… that

Expresses the degree or the extent of something. It’s also can be used like くらい/ぐらい, but it has a stronger emphasis.

Verb-casual, non-past + ほど
なadj + なほど/であるほど
Noun + ほど
いadj + ほど

Ex: 単語を覚えるほど読書力が強くになる。

　　(My reading ability gets stronger as I memorize more words.)

Ex: 今週ほど先週が寒かった。

　　(This week is colder than last week.) 

Ex: 高校生の頃に、過剰なほどの時間をゲームした。

　　(I spent copious amounts of time playing video games when I was in high school.)

はんばい（する）

First kanji can mean sales, selling, and marketing. Second kanji means sell. This one is kind of self explanatory. When する is added it means “to sell”.

Sayuri is chatting with her friend until Kaede has someone catch her eye.

A HUNDRED CARS PAINTED WITH ANIME CHARACTERS CALLED “ITASHA” GATHER FOR AN EVENT

“Itasha” is a car that is painted with characters from anime and games in a flashy way.

On November 7th at Iizuka hot springs in Fukushima, there was an event where about 100 of these of cars were put on display.

Among these cars, there are some that cost more than 10 million yen to turn their cars into an Itasha. The exhibition was filled with Itasha hobbyists, families who brought their children, and the like. They took pictures and enjoyed the event.

A man who put his own car in the exhibition stated “It took 5 months to turn my car into an Itasha. The lights are the same color as my favorite character. I’m glad this event has lighten up the town.”.

The Iizuka hot springs Tourism Association stated “These Itasha gathered from all over Japan. We hope that with this event, more people will know about Iizuka hot springs.”

A translation of 痛車 have been given the name “cringe car”. People who like anime is not an open hobby in Japan’s society as much as it is here in the US. So, to paint your car with characters from games and anime, can be socially cringeworthy in Japan.

※ The verb もどってこない is also an expression which means “to come back”. The うちに in this context means while. So Goofy is saying since Monstro isn’t around to disturb them they can continue where they left off.

  • Well, let’s land. You guys ready?

    • EN: Land where? In the sea? We’ll drown.

※ The ばっか from ばっかじゃないか comes from the word ばっかり. ばっかり means just or only. So Sora is basically saying here “isn’t that just the sea”.

③僕をだれだと思（おも）ってるんだ。このドナルドの魔法（まほう）にまかせておきなさい！

  • Who do you think I am? My magic handle will handle this!
    • EN: Not with my magic, we won’t. Just leave it to me.

※ Donald pulled a Kamina. He seems very full of himself when it comes to his magic. He even puts この after his name here, which only big ego people do like Dio.

④セバスチャン　早く！

　 待（ま）ちなさいアリエル。私（わたし）を置（お）いていくんじゃない！待って！

　落ち着いて（おちついて）セバスチャン。この人（ひと）たちは違（ちが）うみたい。ね　フランだー。

  • Hurry up Sebastian!
    • EN: Come on, Sebastian!
  • Wait Ariel. Don’t leave me behind! Wait up!
    • EN: Ariel, wait! Slow down! Don’t leave me behind!
  • Calm down Sebastian. They seem different. Right, Flounder?
    • EN: Relax, Sebastian. They don’t look like one of them. Right, Flounder.

※ Poor translation on my part. Ariel is literally saying they seem different? In this context and what happens later on with some Heartless it makes since why the translators went with that.

⑤そうだね。でも　何か（なんか）ヘンだよ。

　何（なに）が？

　そういえばそうねー－ あなたたち　どちからきたの？

  • Yeah, but they’re kinda weird.
    • EN: I don’t know. There’s something weird about them.
  • What’d ya mean?
    • EN: What do you mean.
  • Now that you mention, they do. Where are you guys come from?
    • EN: They do seem… a little different. Where are you from?

🎮The fact that Goofy is now a durtle (dog-turtle) and Donald is a ductapus (duck-octopus) really is throwing you guys into the suspicious category. Plus Sora’s laugh isn’t really helping the situation.

⑥もっと北（きた）の海（うみ）から。なにしろ離れてるから、このへんの水（みず）には慣（なら）れてなくって。

　まあー－　それじゃしかたないわね。そうだセバスチャン泳ぎ方（およぎかた）を教（おし）えてあげて

  • A sea that’s far to the north. Anyway, we drifted from there, so we’re not use to these waters.
    • EN: We’re from kind of far away. And we’re not really used to these waters.
  • Well, that can’t be helped. Oh, Sebastian, teach them how to swim.
    • EN: Oh, I see. In that case… Sebastian can show you how we swim around here.

🎮The way Donald is just mean mugging Sebastian is hilarious. Then he turns around like “Me teach them?!” XD.

⑦アリエル！またトリトン王（おう）に叱（しか）られますよ！

　だいじょうぶよ。

  • Ariel! You’re going to get an earful from the King again!

※ The potential verb 叱られます means “to scold”. Sebastian is telling her that he doesn’t want to be yelled at by the king. Not sure if he’s talking about himself or Ariel so I went with him expressing that Ariel will be scolded.

  • Use the the left stick to move around.

※ The noun 移動 means movement but replacing with swim was a good idea to fit the environment they are in. 左右 literally means left and right, but it can also be translated as “around”. They also rearrange some sentences around to stop the receptiveness.

※ The expression さまになって is used to say that someone is getting good at something. The さま comes from 様 which is a polite suffix. However, in this situation there is another definition. Appearance, state, or manner. So Sora is starting to appear to have gotten the manner of swimming down.

⑩実戦（じっせん）おぼえるのが一番（いちばん）だ　ウン。

　たたいたら口（くち）を開（ひら）くかな？

　そういえば私たち、逃（に）げてきたんだったわね。

  • Actual combat is the best experience, I say.
    • EN: Class is over. Good luck!

    • EN: Hitting it might open it.
  • Oh yeah. We ran away from those things to here.
    • EN: Those creatures chased us here.

※ When conjugating てーForm verbs with きた, you can either specify the direction of an action or indicate the action has been going on for some time up until now.

⑪いかん！地（ち）のやつら、宮殿（きゅうでん）に向（む）かったのでは！？

　大変（たいへん）、急（いそ）ぎましょう！

　で、でも外（そと）にはまだあいつらがウロウロしてるんじゃ。。。

  • What misfortune! Those land dwellers are heading for the palace!
    • EN: Oh, no! Those monsters might be heading for the palace, too!
  • Oh no, we have to hurry back!
    • EN: We’d better head back right away!
  • Bu-but those things are still floating around here…
    • EN: But, wh-what if we run into more on our way.

※ There are two ways to read 宮 . It can mean palace for the きゅう reading. And for the みや reading it can mean shrine or something to do with imperial (like palace or prince). Plus 殿 means lord, so Sebastian is clearly talking about King Triton in some way here. And what do kings usually have… a kingdom… or a palace.

⑫ お願（ねが）い、私たちを官殿まで連れて行って（つれていって）！

　このあたりは迷（まよ）いやすいから、まず道案内（みちあんない）のマークをさがしてね。

　あちこちにあるマークのとおりに進めば、官殿につくわ。さあ、行（い）きましょ。

    • EN: I’m sorry, but we need your help. Please come to the palace with us.
  • It’s likely you’ll get loss so look for the guide marks first, okay.
    • EN: The trident markers on the walls point the way there.
  • If you keep following the marks, you’ll reach the palace. Now, let’s go.
    • EN: Okay let’s get going.

※ The word やすい by itself can mean cheap, easy, etc. When it is conjugated with a verb it can mean it is easy to do that verb. For instance 読みやすい which means easy to read.

    • EN: And who are they?
  • They were passing by when they saved us.
    • EN: They helped us fight off those creatures.

    • EN: They don’t look familiar.

⑱俺（おれ）たち　遠（とお）くの海から来（き）たもんで。

　 そうそう”鍵穴（かぎあな）”を探しにね。

　 ”鍵穴”？

  • We came from a sea far away.
    • EN: We’re from an ocean very far away.
  • Yeah, we’re lookin’ for the “Keyhole”
    • EN: Yup. We came to find the Keyhole.
  • “Keyhole”?
    • EN: The what?

🎮Goofy wasn’t mincing words there. Just straight to the point. Remember Goofy, “world order”. Looks like the King already knows and is shocked. Never played the mobile game but I wonder if they go into how Triton knows about the keyhole there.

  • What’s that?
  • Uh well it’s a-
    • EN: Well, it’s a–
  • I don’t know of such a thing. Never heard of it either.

※ The verb 黙る means to be silent or to say nothing. Thought I’d go with a classic parent phrase. 育て方 literally means “way of raising”, but I think the translators made a good move here since he is talking about his parenting style.

※ The expression ごもっとも is way to convey that someone is right or describes something is only natural or reasonable.

※ The verb おっしゃる is the keigo verb for “to say” or “to speak”. There other verbs that become completely different words when keigo is involved. Since Sebastian is talking to royalty it only makes since that he talks up to King Triton in a respectful manner.

むき出しの想いはブルー

むき出しの（むきだしの・剝き出しの）

むき comes from the the verb 剥く which means to peel, to come off, or to bare. When a verb is conjugated with 出し it means to start doing that verb. For instance 走り出します or “I started to run”。

With that in mind, our first word can be translated to “Start baring” or “Start peeling” or “Start coming off”. Since we have の here there must be something that we are baring or peeling or something that is coming off.

However when the word is like this, it is only used as a noun or a adjective so it would be better to translate it to “Bare”.

想い（おもい）

The kanji for this word means concept, thought, or idea. This word is usually defined as “feelings” or “thoughts” so it matches pretty nicely. Another thing about this word is that it sounds similar to the verb 思う which means “to think”. On top of that, 想 can be switched out for this verb as well. But what’s the difference.

From what I’ve learned the latter has more to do with thoughts that have to deal with how someone feels and not some objective or logical thought.

は

We’ll just put that this as “is” for now. Or “are” since feelings is plural.

ブルー

This is the katakanized word for blue. It can also mean sad. Since we are talking about feeling maybe that will be a better fit. Let’s test it out:

“Bare feelings are sad”

Or maybe going with blue would be better?

“Bare Feelings are Blue” or “Laying Bare our Blue Feelings”

Not sure if that makes since but it has a good poetic vibe to it. Better than what I could come up with.

This title comes from the 7th episode of SELECTION PROJECT. Many girls around Japan have auditioned and sang their way to see who will be the next Japan Idol. It has a nice spin on other idol anime with an American Idol spin to it. The final rounds are also made into a reality tv show. Not to keen on either one of those things, but they have handled it quite nicely during the show.

Now that I’m done prefacing I’ll talk about the show with no spoilers. The show starts out with our main character, Suzune, who had to have heart surgery to save her life. Fast forward a few years, and now that she’s healthier, she decided to become and idol. Not just any kind of idol, but the same kind of idol that she looked up to. So 9 girls are chosen from different locations in Japan to duke it out in a 3-round competition to see who will be the next top idol.

Regardless of the plot, it has some darn good CGI. It’s like the first season of Love Live had to walk so shows like this could run.

NOW HERE ARE A POSSIBLE SPOILER/PREDICTION

WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS COMING THROUGH IN 3, 2, 1…

This show is kind of like IDOLY PRIDE. A show/manga that I’ve recently brought up on a couple of occasions. I think that the obvious route they are going with the story is that Suzune had a heart donation with the very idol she looked up to. Plus, the sister of said idol, Rena is competing in this, too. Same as IDOLY PRIDE in that regard. Speaking of heart donations, this is the third time we are getting a plot twist like this in an anime. First it was IDOLY PRIDE, then it was The Detective is Already Dead, and now SELECTION PROJECT is bringing up the rear.

Looks like Aki saw me in Saffron. Didn’t even say hi. What’re you a stalker? Of course he wants to me to battle him. His Sandslash looks strong but, Kyoushoku’s Surf took it down. Why would he send out a Ninetales next? Does he want to lose?

Cloyster almost killed Ikkokesei’s so I switched to Inazuma. 3 more to go! When I switched to Soreiyu, Kadabra hit ’em with a psybeam. 1 HP left! Then Soreiyu took it down with a Bone Club. Aki’s next Pokemon… a Jolteon? Seriously? Making this too easy, Aki. Bone Club. And done. So he plans on going to the Pokémon League. Wait how many badges does he have? I only have 4 and I beat him so…

I talked to a guy who saw our battle. He gave me a Pokémon called Lapras. Couldn’t decline, so I guess I’ll take it. What should I name it? Sounds like Laplace’s Demon so I’ll call it Mamon. Well time to go kick Team Rocket’s Boss’ ass again.

日本語のイベント

最近、本を読みました。マンガではありませんが、本物の本（ちょっとオヤジギャグっぽい）。３月前、初めての本を読みました。「黒魔女さんが通る」といいます。角川文庫は本をたくさん作ります。角川つばさ文庫です（これは何ですか？Japanese Book Club Cafeのポストをクリックしてください。ポストは英語で書きます。）。

この本は子供向けの本ですが、僕として、完璧です。でも、ちょっと難しくて、プロット少しわかりにくいと思います。

だから今、もっと現実的な本を読み始めました。「怪盗レッド」といいます。こんな本の方が面白くて、わかりやすいと思います。怪盗と名探偵の話の方がいいと思います。

It similar to the grammar point ～にくい. This grammar is a way to express something is very hard are next to being impossible to do.

Verb-ます stem + がたい

Ex: 指紋は消しがたいので、この証拠が使える。

　　(The fingerprints are hard to erase, so we can use this evidence.)

Ex: 僕にとっては、すぐに忘れがたいシリーズになっている。

　　(For me, this series instantly became unforgettable.)

Ex: この本はフリガナがあまりないので、読みがたいだ。

　　(This book doesn’t have that much furigana, so it’s nearly impossible to read.)

Ex: ときどき、彼女の声が小さくてなるので、聞きがたいです。

　　(Sometimes she’s so quiet that it’s hard to hear her.)

[ぎみ]

-like, -looking

Expresses something that looks or seems to be. Similar to みたい or らしい. However this grammar is often used in situations that are not good. Like taking a test that you didn’t study for.

Noun + 気味

Ex: 一日中も暗号を解いたので、頭が疲れ気味です。

　　(I solved ciphers all day, so my brain feels like shutting down [so I’m tired].)

Ex: 明日、テストがあるが、さっぱり勉強し気味だから、早く勉強しないと。

　　(I have a test tomorrow, but I haven’t studied [it’s like haven’t studied] enough, so I better study fast.) 

Ex: これは初めの翻訳仕事なので、少し緊張気味だ。

　　(Since this is my first translation job, I’m a little nervous.) 

Ex: 運動しちゃダメ。運動は風邪気味の身体に厳しいです。

　　(Don’t exercise. Exercise is hard on the body when your sick.)

学習（する）

がくしゅう（する）

study; learning; tutorial

When I see 学 I think of the word 学校 or “school”. The kanji 学 itself can mean things like “study” and “learning”. The 習 kanji makes me think of the verb 習う meaning ”to learn”. Interesting thing is 勉強 ended up taking over this meaning in the Meiji era due to acquiring knowledge becoming a virtue.

Subaru: Hey, how are you guys doing?
Eiko: Ah, shoot. Sora…! Why didn’t you heal him, Donald?! 
Naruyuki: If you change the battle setting, Donald will only heal Sora.

🎮This Boss battle reminds me of the boss from FF9. The black mage character named Vivi got trapped inside of a plant monster in the forest and it was up to Zidane and Steiner to get him out. Pretty sure this is what Tetsuya Nomura was thinking. The way Paradigm Shifter gets up close to it while blocking is a wonderful strategy. And the fire salvo was brilliant in case you get swatted away.

※ The word 装備 means equipment while 数 means number. As in the amount of equipment the character can hold. The katakana word アクセサリー means accessory. So the sentence literally means “number of accessories equipped up”.

🎮And somehow that fight caused the water to drain. Or did Monstro just take that water and shoot it out of his blowhole. Also how is there so much water when they are in space. Oh, oh no. It might be Monstro’s saliva。。。 キモイ. Also speaking of equipment, I wonder about Riku’s sword. Is it a Keyblade or not?

※ The word はっきり・ハッキリ is an adverb that means clearly. I’m glad that we both agreed that loud and clear was a nice choice of words here.

🎮Glad Pinocchio didn’t get captured again. Now Sora can really beat this thing. さすが、Paradigm Shifter. Keeping close to the monster while steadily swinging away at it’s health. The well timed blocks were pretty cool. That stomach acid is a pain. Especially when it shoots it. Heck it even has a poison effect for short period of time. To be honest I rarely blocked and just brute forced this game XD.

幸セ（しあわせ）

This word can be used as a noun or a なーAdj. By itself the kanji used here can mean “good luck”, “fortune”, “happiness”.

But when used as 幸せ, it is mostly used to mean happiness. It also has other meanings that are based off the kanji meaning mentioned before.

ハ（は）

This is a particle that indicates the sentences subject.

Put this with 幸せ and you get “Happiness is”.

月明カリ（つきあかり）

The first kanji 月 means “moon”. And the 明かり part is a noun for the word “light”. So, it literally means “moonlight”.

“Happiness is moonlight” doesn’t seem to make sense so let’s continue.

ノ（の）

This particle is most likely the possessive particle. The word prior to it takes the possessiveness. Perhaps, something like “Happiness is moonlight’s”. Let’s go on to the end to see if we have to rearrange some things.

下ニ（したに）

The kanji 下 can mean down, below or under. Now that we know that there is a direction after the の particle, we can change this to fit the sentence into English.

For instance 机の下に or “under/underneath the desk”. It wouldn’t make since to translate this to “the desk’s underneath”. Just like how the moonlight’s under/underneath wouldn’t make sense.

The final translation should be “Happiness is Under the Moonlight”. Or if we want to be more poetic(?), maybe “Happiness Basks in the Moonlight”.

That works. I am curious why they use katakana in some parts. Maybe an aesthetic touch or to match the title. Usually when I see katakana on words, I usually think of it as them emphasizing the words.

Then I thought it was some interesting code （暗号）. せはかりのに but that wouldn’t make any sense… right?

Anyways, the title comes from:

大正オトメ御伽話

大正（たいしょう）

Taisho is an era in Japanese history. Like the Meiji era. These eras are named after the emperors who reigned during a time period.

The Taisho Era was from July 30, 1912 to December 25, 1926. Other than that tidbit, I don’t much about that time in Japan. Then again I’m not that interested in history.

So from this, we know that this story is set in the early 20th century.

オトメ（乙女）

This word comes up a bit when girl’s are talking about a “maiden’s heart”. It can be translated to “maiden” and the interesting thing that I found about this word is that usually pertains to girls from age 7 to 18.

The first kanji 乙 can mean young while 女 means woman or girl. So it’s “young girl” or “young woman”. But I’ll go with maiden sense that is ingrained in my head and sounds better to me.

御伽話（御伽噺・おとぎばなし）

Here’s a new word I’ve never seen before this anime. The word together means “fairy tale”.

The first kanji might be a way to prefix a noun in a polite manner. Think of it like 茶 in お茶. The 伽 can mean attending nursing, entertaining. The last kanji 話 can mean talk or speech. It can also mean story.

So maybe a rougher translation would be “nursery story”?

The title of the show is “Taisho Maiden Fairy Tale”.

I’m really enjoying this show. So much that I wanted to pick apart both an episode title and the title itself.

The story starts of with a boy from a wealthy family named Tamahiko Shima who has gotten in a car wreck. His mother dies in the car and he can no longer use his dominant hand. Once this is found out he is written off from his family and is stowed away from society. The melancholy of the first episode kinda reminded me of No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai.

Luckily (or unfortunately), a girl named Yuzu Tachibana is designated as his bride to be, which settles her family’s debt. I know that this story is in the 1920’s but I do wonder how common this was back then (Am I getting interested in history?! O_O). Oh yeah the lucky part. She ends up bringing a glimmer of light to this pessimistic boy and I do hope that she ends up changing Tamahiko and perhaps his whole family.

The manga this anime is adapted from is already finished. Plus it only has 5 volumes, so I might check this out on Book☆Walker.

REI’S JOURNAL

Went to another floor with the teleporter. They’re holding the employees hostage. Defeated the Team Rocket guards’ Pokémon but it’s probably best for them to stay here. By the way, I wonder if they called the cops. Ah, so they are after Silph Co.’s products. One of the grunts had a Voltorb. It self-destructed while Hayattaka was flying. Jokes on you!

After taking down another grunt, he told me that his boss in on the 11th floor. Went to the 11th floor and got stopped by another one. Asked me if I had an appointment with his boss. Sure do. Came to kick his butt. Strange. This is the 11th floor, but I don’t see the room where the boss is located. There has to be more rooms on this floor. Gotta find another way. A nurse healed my Pokemon.

After a little trial and error (and feeling like I’m about to puke), I teleported to a new place. Wait is that Aki?! What’s he doing here?

When I see 学 I think of the word 学校 or “school”. The kanji 学 itself can mean things like “study” and “learning”. Second kanji means “question”. I guess this is from student asking question in order to learn.

BONUS: a more literal sense of this sentence would be “However, she made light of the things she learned”.

Just when you thought I was done raving about Detective Conan XD.

＜名探偵コナン＞劇場版“幻”のハロウィーンビジュアル公開　激レア情報！？　警察学校組が仮装　

Detective Conan Movie “Phantom” Halloween Visual Revealed. A Rare Sight! The Police Academy Cast in Costumes

A Halloween themed visual was released for the popular anime “Detective Conan”. There are plans for the 25th movie to be in theaters on next year’s Golden Week. However, they released “Super Rare Info” visual without going into details of the film.

In the visual, there are 5 cast members including Toru Amuro who is the lead character of “Tokyo Police Academy” enjoying the night at the Scramble Crossing in Shibuya. The visual shows Rei Furuya (Toru Amuro) dressed up as Dracula, Jinpei Matsuda as a werewolf, Kenji Hagiwara as a demon, Hiromitsu Morifushi as a mummy, and Wataru Date as Frankenstein.

This Halloween visual was drawn due to Furuya being the only who didn’t died in the line of duty. So this “Phantom” visual is a way for them all to get together for a one night celebration.

Here are some comments from another article. Compared to the one I translated, this article goes into other details. I’ll summarize then roughly translate the comments.

So the article talks about the visual, who’s in it and all that jazz. What is different is that they are informing the readers that from October 26th to October 30th Detective Conan will do a collab with TikTok. Meaning this visual (maybe more) will appear on TikTok during that time. It goes on to say that the title of the movie and visual will be announced later.

kax: I like how happy they look. It shows off their youthful energy. Matsuda especially. Must be a happy memory.

itu: This is for the Detecive Conan Movie right? Are you trying to sell out the main characters to increase revenue? If you want to sell out to that kind of Otaku, then you should finish up Detective Conan already.

rin: How are Takagi, Satou the main characters in this film? Conan’s not in the poster either. I bet you’re the kind of writer that says “who needs a main character” even as a joke. The writer is making a fool out of the old fans. How about taking out “Conan” from the title of the series then?

one: Someone did some good funeral makeup work on those dead police detectives.

usj: Some have said that this is the Police Academy version, but since they’re getting there own series, that’s can’t be the case. Well, maybe it’ll have something to do with past cases that the 5 of them got wrapped up in. Realistically speaking, Conan, Takagi, and Satou will probably be the main characters though. Can’t tell how much Amuro will be involved. Plus, this doesn’t really look like a poster for the movie.

tak: Will it have a Halloween plot?

Wow! Some people are really cut throat in these comments. This doesn’t look like a promotional visual for next years movie. Its more like an advertisement for the upcoming spin-off series that is going to start.

※ I usually see こら or こらあ in katakana when being exclaimed. This word just means “Hey”. If you use a little wordplay, you could also make it sound like コラ from the popular drink コカ・コーラ (Coca-Cola).

　ソラ　早（はや）く追（お）いかけるんだ！

  • Did you say Pinocchio?! Wait Pinocchio! Pinocchio!

※ なさい is an expression that you can use to tell someone to do something. You can use なさい like this when you are talking to a child or a pet.

🎮How the heck did Pinocchio even get here? Last time we saw him, he was in Traverse Town.

※ The grammar より (which I explained in detail here) is a way to compare things. In this context it is used as a particle that means “than”.

⑧どうやらピノキオのことを知（し）っとるようだがーー

　わしのいない間（あいだ）ピノキオは良い子（いいこ）にしてたかね？

　まあまあ　せっかく来たんだ　ゆっくりしていきなさい。なあ　ピノキオーー

  • It seems you already know Pinocchio–
    • EN: So, you seem to know Pinocchio quite well.
  • Has he been a good boy while I wasn’t around?
    • EN: I hope he was a good boy in my absence.
  • Well you just got here so take it easy for now. Right Pinocchio–
    • EN: Well, we’ve all had quite a journey. Right, Pinocchio? Pinocchio?

🎮Annnd he’s not listening to a word. Possible cause he saw someone go further into the belly of Monstro. Would’ve been a better idea to get Sora’s attention before racing off on your own.

⑨「腹部（ふくぶ）１」への通路（つうろ）

  • Passage to the Abdomen 1.
    • EN: Chamber 1
  • What’re you doing? Let’s head back.
    • EN: What are you doing? Come on, let’s go back.
  • Geppetto is getting worried.
    • EN: You know, Geppetto’s awfully worried about you.

※ It’s probably best to translate this to Abdomen Passage 1 (or Stomach Passage 1) instead but I’ll keep it somewhat literal here. On another note, find it strange how they translate locations. I guess it gets the point across. There in a whale so, there’s bound to be several chambers inside of it.

⑩早く　外（そと）へ出（で）ないと　遊（あそ）んでる場合（ばあい）じゃないどろ。

　おまえも前（まえ）はよく遊んでたのにな。

　 キーブレードの勇者（ゆうしゃ）になったら子供（こども）の遊びは卒業（そつぎょう）か？

  • We gotta hurry and get back. This isn’t the time to be playing around.
    • EN: Pinocchio, stop fooling around! This no time for games!
  • Even though you were playing a lot earlier.
    • EN: But, Sora, I thought you like games.
  • What, now that you’ve become the Keyblade Master, you’re too old for child’s play?
    • EN: Or are you too cool to play them now that you have the Keyblade?

※The word 卒業 means graduate. In Japan they use this word to not only mean graduating from school. It can also be used to say that you’ve moved on from something and/or no longer do something.

🎮Riku being… well “Riku” again. Maleficent has definitely got inside his head.

※そうじゃなくて just means “that’s not it” but in this context I thought I’d go into more detail. だから can mean “because”. However, it can also mean “like I said” or “I told you already”.

　ふざけるなよ！

  • Who knows. If you catch me, then I’ll tell you. How about that?
    • EN: Maybe. Catch us and maybe I’ll tell you what I know.

※The expression 気にかかる means “to weigh on one’s mind” and “to be worried about (something/someone)”.

⑭あの少年（しょうねん）はおまえよりもキーブレードと新（あたら）しい仲間（なかま）を選（えら）んだというのに。

  • Even though he chose the Keyblade and his new friends over you.
    • EN: He has all but deserted you for the Keyblade and his new companions, after all.

⑮別に（べつに）気にしてるわけじゃないちょっとからかってやっただけだ。

  • Not really worried about him. Just messing with him a bit.
    • EN: I don’t care about him. I was just messing with him a little.

※ The expression わけじゃない means “(something) is not the case”. Basically used to express that someone’s assumption is incorrect. からかって is the てーForm of the verb 揶揄う（からかう）. You might be familiar with this verb’s noun form からかい from the show からかい上手の高木さん (Teasing Master Takagi-san).

  • Is that so. Well, if you say so.
    • EN: Oh, really? Of course you were.

※ At first I was going to translate this as “Is that so. Well, that’s fine.” but I thought that wouldn’t do much service to how sarcastic Maleficent is being here.

  • Do take care of the darkness within your heart. The Heartless will feed upon it.
    • EN: Beware the darkness in you heart. The Heartless prey upon it.

※ The word こそ is like using a reverse UNO card. For instance the phrase こちらこそ means “it is I should who should say so” or in a less formal tone it could mean “same to you” or “look who’s talking”.

　本当にカイリを助ける気（たすける・き）があるのか？

  • Aren’t you just going around showing off that Keyblade?
    • EN: You only seem interested in running around and showing off that Keyblade these days.
  • Do you even want to help Kairi?
    • EN: Do you even want to save Kairi?

    • EN: I do.

※ The word 得意気 means “pride” and 振りまわして・振り回して in this context means “to show off”. It can also mean “to swing”, so I could have went with “You’re just going place to place swinging that Keyblade around”.

※ When you put a verb and 気 together it becomes “motivation to do…”. Sora is also literally saying “That’s…” but this is usually meant as a pause to think of what to say or to start denying what a person is saying.

A scream from Pinocchio?! I wonder what kind of monstrosity (get it? Monstro … monstro + sity　オヤジギャグすまんねな) did he run into?

By the way, did he ever run into any Heartless while the boys were chasing him down. Or did Riku protect him. Hmm…

すす（煤）

It is usually written and seen in kana form but I thought I’d go into the kanji as well. The kanji for soot is 煤. It consists of the radicals for fire (火), sweet (甘) and tree (木) .

Don’t know where the sweet part comes from but when I imagine a tree being burned, it can make soot. When I was younger I thought soot only came from coal but there are other ways to make it. Go figure.

による

I explained this grammar point in another post #54 here.

[による・によって]

This grammar point is used to show how something is accomplished. Usually the て-form (によって) of this grammar is used. It can be translated as “through (doing something)” or “by (doing something)”.

The definition itself means something is done “by means of” or “due to”. So, put this together with Soot and you get “due to soot”. So what is the soot causing?

病（びょう・いたずき・いたつき・いたづき・やまい）

This kanji has several different readings but they all can mean “illness” or “sickness”.

A sickness from soot. I think its safe to say that’s the right way to go about thinking. However, this translation can be shortened to “Soot Illness” or “Soot Sickness”.

Simple. This title comes from the second episode of Shadows House. They put end cards at the end of the episode (like this one) to introduce the next episode.

The show was really good and it’ll be getting a second season next year. It is about a mansion which holds many mysteries within it. Living Dolls, which are servants to these shadows (called Shadow Masters) that are seen as royalty. All for the sake of Shadows House.

But… what is a Living Doll? Why must they never leave Shadows House? Why do these Shadow Masters look like silhouettes of the Living Dolls? Majority if not all of these answers lie within this season. Once the mysteries are exposed what will the Living Dolls and the Shadow Masters do next?

さって、ソレイユとハヤッタカがもっと強くて、ヤマブキシティ戻るぞ。またロケット団倒さないと。シルフカンパニーで倒すつもりだ。よし、ビルでバッチリ忍び込んだ。

パネルがいっぱいある。ロケット団のベースのパネル似てるかも。お、このパネルでテレポートしてできる。どうやって作るかな？シルフカンパニーの科学者がダブルエージェントだ。そうか、内部犯行だよな。まいいか。全員倒す。パネルは頭がぐるぐるさせただけど。さすが、イナズマ、楽しそうだな。回る乗り物が好きかも。一方で、俺が吐きそう。会員はこんなところに迷子になったかなあ？

下っ端を倒したとき、「」と言った。それなら、永遠にバカにする。カードキー落ちた。気付かなかったらしい。ラッキー！これでゲートを開ける。キズグスリだんだん足りない。ポケモンセンターで皆を回復しに行って、キズグスリを買いに行く。

奴らが思ったより強い。少しだけさ。だが、俺たちが倒れるだ。ちなみ、なぜこんなところにいる？ハイスペックな技術盗むつもりだ？させないか！

REI’S JOURNAL

Now that Soreiyu and Hayattaka are stronger, it’s time to head back to Saffron City. I have to take down Team Rocket again. I plan on taking them down in Silph Co. Successfully infiltrated the building.

There’s a bunch of panels in here. Are they like those panels in Team Rocket’s base? Oh they are teleport panels. Wonder how do they make these. Silph Co. Scientists are double agents. So, it was an inside job. Meh. We’ll take you all down. These panels are making me a bit dizzy though. Inazuma’s having fun as per usual. Must like spinning rides. On other hand, I think I’m gonna puke. Wonder if the employees ever get lost in this building.

After beating a member, he said “It’s not smart not to pick a fight with Team Rocket!”. If that’s the case, then I’ll be a fool my for the rest of my life. He dropped a card key. Doesn’t look like he’s noticed. Lucky! Looks like I can open the gates with this. Running out of potions so I should go heal my team at Pokémon Center and buy some potions.

These guys are a bit stronger than I expected, but I think we can take them down. Wonder why they are here anyway. Are they trying to steal some advance tech? Like I’m letting that happen.

Hello everyone! Kyuusei here to teach you Japanese and show what I find interesting about Japan.

Wow, reached 100 posts（まさか１００回 笑）! And to celebrate I’ll be dedicating majority of this post to my favorite franchise: Detective Conan. Congrats on reaching 100 volumes, Aoyama-Sensei!

With that being said, let’s continue.

日本語のイベント

小学生の頃に、アニメを見始めました。子供だったのに、大人向けテレビ番組編成という「adult swim」でアニメを見ました。「Outlaw Star」「Cowboy Bebop」「YuYu Hakusho」など見ました。

これらのアニメの中で、名探偵コナンが早いに大好きになりました。あいにく、アメリカで人気じゃなかったから、１２３だけエピソードが英語でダビィングしました。名探偵コナンのおかげで、「Sherlock Holmes」と推理ジャンル気になって、大人になった時、日本語を勉強し始めた理由になりました。大学生頃、日本語で名探偵コナンを見始めました。

先週は１００巻発売しました。英語で読んだことがありましたが、最近、日本語で読み始めました。このシリーズはすっごく懐かしくて、興味深いです。

このポストは名探偵コナンはお祝いしたいから。１００回ポスト、１００巻マンガ。似合うでしょう。もちろん名探偵コナンのほうがいいですよ。すなわち、青山先生本、名探偵コナンを作って心から感謝します。１００巻おめでとうございます。最後まで名探偵コナンを読んで見てつもりです。

[どんなに～ても]

no matter how…

The どんな・どんなに part can be thought of as How much. The ても part is stating regardless of what ever that “how much…” is. This grammar expresses a conditional situation that depends on a certain amount (of action, a thing, or characteristic, etc.).

Verb-casual, non-past + どころか
いadjective + どころか
なadjective + (な)どころか
Noun + どころか

Ex: もう時間がないんですよ。どんなに勉強しても、１００点は無理だって。

(There isn’t anytime left. No matter how much you study, you won’t get a 100.)

Ex: 彼はどんなバカでも、悪賢いやつだ。

　　(No matter how stupid he is, the guy’s pretty crafty.) 

Ex: 彼女はどんなに頭がよくても、騙されないでよ。

　　(Don’t let her fool you, no matter how smart she is.)

Ex: 君はどんなに不敵でも、このスタントが無茶だぞ。

　　(Don’t care how much of a dare devil you are, this stunt is ridiculous.)

[ふりをする]

to pretend, to act as if

Used to describe something or someone that acting or pretending to do/be something else.

Verb-casual + ふりをする
Noun + のふりをする
いadj + ふりをする
なadj + なふりをする

Ex: もう午後１時半ですよ。寝るふりをしないで。

　　(It’s already 1:30 pm. Don’t act like your asleep.)

Ex: 小さい頃、僕はヒーローとか名探偵のふりをした。

　 （I used to pretend to be a super hero or a detective when I was little.）

Ex: 騙されないでよ。彼は優しいふりをするだけだ。あいつはただの女たらし。

　　(Don’t let him fool you. He’s only pretending to be nice. He’s just a womanizer.)

Ex: それで、あの男は純真なふりをしてる女が付き合ってる。実は、あの彼女は妖婦だ。

　　(And he’s dating a girl that acts as if she’s innocent. In truth, she’s a femme fatale.)

N3　動詞

外出

がいしゅつ（する）

going out; outing; leaving (one’s home, office, etc.)

The first kanji means “outside”. You usually see this kanji in words like 外国(foreign country). The second one means “to exit”. Not that much detective work with this one. It’s pretty straight forward.

However, I did find some interesting words from this verb.

外出中 is used when you are out of the office or away form home.

Another one (that I can totally relate to) is 外出嫌い which literally means “hate going out” or better known as a “homebody”.

対話

Eiko and Ryuji are meeting for the first time at a marriage interview.

However, they are both in for a surprise.

[運命の人？！真実はいつも一つ！]

A: 私はエイコでございます。

B: リュウジでございます。

AとB：よろしくお願いいたします。

A: 終末がありますか？

B: （よーし、これはチャンスだ！）アニメが大好きです。

A: （え？！本当？！あたしも！）あ、どんなアニメかしら？

B: （ちぇー、ビビッてねー。丁寧なくはどうだ。）アニメをたくさん見たが、一番は名探偵コナンだと思う。

A: （そうですか。興味深い。いつか見せてほしいかしら。）あたしも！

B: え？！エイコも？（もしかして、母親の罠。なんとか、確かめる。でも、顔が赤くて、演技じゃないらしい。まあいか。付き合っておく。）

A: （しまった！あたしが失敗しちゃった。思いを話し出しちゃった！何をするんだよ、エイコ？！）えーと。。。実は、あたしは名探偵コナンの大ファンだが、見合いで母親はこんな話が禁止した。

B: あ、僕も。お母さんは「オタクの話が禁止。怖がらせるだけよ。」って。めんどくせーな。だが、名探偵コナンも大好きだよ。

A: ですが、アニメが好き女が嫌いなら、この時はチャンス。。。え？リュウジも名探偵コナンが好きなの？うそ！もしかして、母親のー

B: 罠じゃない。

A: え？！能力者か？！エスパー？！

B: 違う。。。ただの同じ思いだった。（わ～、少し天然。なんかかわいい。）

A: あ、フ～　助かった。じゃあ、名探偵コナンが大好きなの？本当？

B: ええ。小さい頃、マンガを読んで、アニメを見てる。エイコは？

A: あたしも！今日、１００巻を買って予定があるけれど、ここに来たんだ。

B: サボっていい？

A: 。。。

B: 欲しくないか？

A: 行くわよ。

B: さ、行こう。本屋の近道知ってる。

[Fateful encounter?! There’s only one truth!]

A: My name is Eiko.

B: I am Ryuji.

A: It is a pleasure to meet you.

B: Do you have any hobbies?

A: (Alright here’s my chance!) I love anime.

B: (Huh?! Really?! I do too!) Oh, what kind of anime?

A: (Tch- that didn’t scare her. How about if I drop the keigo.) I’ve watched a ton of anime, but Detective Conan is the best.

B: (Oh is that so? That sounds interesting. Perhaps you can show me sometime.) Me too!

A: Huh?! You too? (No way, this has gotta be trap set up by my parents. Gotta check somehow. But, her face is all red right now, it doesn’t look like she’s acting. Ah, what the hell. I’ll play along with her “act”.)

B: (Damn it! I messed up. I’ve said what I was thinking! What are you doing, Eiko?!) Umm… Actually, I’m a big fan of Detective Conan but my mother forbade me to talk about it during the marriage interview.

A: Oh, same here. Mum told me, “No talking about your nerd stuff. It’ll just scare her off.”. What a pain. But, yeah, I love Detective Conan, too.

A: But if you dislike women who love anime, this is your chan- Wha-? No way? Did your parents set-

B: Not a set up.

A: What? Are you psychic? An Esper?!

B: No… we were just thinking the same thing. (She’s a bit of a space case. Heh kinda cute.)

A: Oh, phew~ well that helps. So you love Detective Conan? Really?

B: Yeah. Ever since I was little, I read the manga and watched the anime. What about you?

A: Me too! I was going to buy the 100th volume today, but I had come here.

B: Wanna ditch?

A: …

B: You want it don’t you?

A: Alright I’ll go.

B: Okay, let’s go then.

名探偵コナン：コミックス第100巻発売　連載27年で大台

DETECTIVE CONAN: AFTER 27 YEARS, 100TH VOLUME REALEASED!

The 100th volume of Gosha Aoyama’s popular manga “Detective Conan” (published by Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday) was released on October 18th. The manga started its serialization in 1994 and reached the major milestone of the 100th volume in 27 years.

The spin-off manga series were also released on that day: 5th volume of “Daily Life of Zero (Tea Time)” and the 6th volume of “Criminal Hanazawa”.

Detective Conan is a manga about a boy named Edogawa Conan solves many difficult cases. It started back in 1994 and it’s anime adaptation started broadcasting in 1996. The manga has sold over 230 million copies.

When I first started out, I thought it would be a blessing if I could publish one volume after 3 months of serialization but… (lol)

I never thought it’d reach 100 volumes…

Aoyama’s such a joker. But what a milestone to reach. Congrats! They’ve been doing a lot to celebrate this.

They set up a poll to vote for the best criminal in the whole franchise. Here are the top 4.

  1. 麻生 成実 (Asō Seiji) (aka 浅井 成実 Asai Seiji/Narumi)
    • From Volume 7 and probably the most memorable culprit for me. So memorable in fact, that this case where Seiji appears was remade for the 1000 and 1001st episodes.
  2. 津川 秀治 (Shuji Tsugawa)
    • From Volume 10, this librarian was creepy as all get out but he’s mostly known for getting busted by the Detective Boys for smuggling drugs through library books.
  3. 広田 雅美 Masami Hirota (aka 宮野 明美 Miyano Akemi)
    • From Volume 2 comes another heartbreaking yet memorable culprit is Masami Hirota. I won’t spoil much as she is important to the plot. However, I find it strange that she shows up twice in the anime (episode 13 and episode 128).
  4. 島袋 君恵 Kimie Shimabukuro
    • Unfortunately don’t remember this case that much. Been a long time since I watched these episodes (222-224). Guess I’ll get to it when I reach Volume 28.

They even sent the bronze statue of Conan to London where the statue of Sherlock Holmes reside. Perfect spot to visit for “Holmes’ Apprentice”.

Out of the desert and now the boys are… a whale’s dessert?!

 ①新（あたら）しいトリニティが手に入った（てにはいった）から、今（いま）まで　 　　 行（い）った場所（ばしょ）を調（しら）べなおそうか。

　 そういえば、タウンのアクセサリーショップにもマークがあったような。

  • Since we got a new Trinity, we can probably get to different places now.
    • EN: We can revisit some places and unseal more Trinities.

  • Now that you mention it, I think there was a mark in the Accessory Shop. 
    • EN: Wasn’t there a Trinity Mark in the accessory shop?

🎮And we’re just going to ignore that hint XD. Big whale @ 3:00

  • What the heck is that?! 
    • EN: What is that?
  • It’s freaking huge…
    • EN: Wow, it’s huge!

    • EN: It’s a giant whale!

    • EN: It’s Monstro!

※ You may be familiar with the word 化け物. It has the same meaning as 怪物 which is monster. The only difference is that 化け物 can mean things similar to monsters (like ghosts and goblins, etc.)

③やつこそクジラの中（なか）のクジラ、クジラの王（おう）だ。おまけにとても凶暴（きょうぼう）なんだ！

　 うわあ！？ソラ、にげて！！

　だめだ！のみこまれる！！

  • Monstro is the king of all whales. To make matters worse, he’s very vicious.
    • EN: He’s a whale of a whale, and vicious besides!
  • Woah! Sora, get us out of here!!
    • EN: Whoa! Sora, get us out of here!
  • I can’t! We’re going to get swallowed up!!
    • EN: Too late! He’s going to swallow us!

※ 飲み込まれる（のみこまれる）takes the verb 飲む “to drink” or “to swallow”. When a verb is combined with 込む like this it means “to do [the verb] thoroughly”. So Sora is telling them that Monstro is about to swallow the whole ship.

🎮Find it strange that Donald has Sora piloting the ship. He was so adamant earlier.

④ホントなんだって　まちがいないよ！おれ見（み）たんだから！

　声をきいたんじゃなかったっけ？

  • I’m telling truth! I saw it! 
    • EN: It’s true! I saw it with my own eyes!
  • Sure it wasn’t a voice you heard?
    • EN: You sure you didn’t just hear it this time?

🎮 I like how they use less kanji for when Sora and Riku were little. Really puts in some interesting detail with that.

    • EN: There’s a huge monster in there, I tell you!

  • If it’s really monster then– 
    • EN: All right. Suppose there really is a monster…
  • Will we be able to catch it on our own, Sora?
    • EN: Think we can beat it by ourselves, Sora?

※ もし and たら are usually used together to express a hypothetical. I guess Riku is wondering if it is a monster then what will him and Sora do. The EN version says beat it, but 捕まえられる is the potential form of the verb 捕まる which means “to catch”. I think it’s better to say “beat it” in this sense considering it is a “monster” there dealing with.

⑦リクとおれならやれるさ！　

  • We can do it Riku!
    • EN: No problem. Let’s do it!

※なら is used when you are expressing hypotheticals. So Sora is saying, “if it’s you and I Riku, we can handle it” or something like that.

⑧ほら　そこだよ　うなり声がきこえるだろ？

  • See, I told you. There! Can’t you hear that growling sound?
    • EN: Listen! There! Can you hear it growling?

※うなり＝唸り, which means to growl. Probably in hiragana because (which was touched on a bit before) they’re kids and they probably don’t know those kanji yet. So, the writers for the game probably made it where this dialogue came off a bit more childish to reflect their age.

  • Shhh quiet–

⑩こういう時（とき）はしんちょうな行動（こうどう）がひつようなんだーー

  • We should be careful in times like this.
    • EN: We’ve gotta be careful.

⑪風（かぜ）だよ。風の音が怪物の声にきこえたんだ。

  • It was just the wind. Must’ve mistook it for a monster.
    • EN: See that? It was just the wind making that noise.

⑫なーんだ　そうだったのかーー　つまんねえの。

  • Oh, so that’s what it was– boring.
    • EN: Aw, man. I wish it was a monster!

※つまんねえ＝つまらない = boring. It’s just set as a more colloquial and rough way of saying it.

⑬あれ？あそこにあるの　なんだ？

  • Huh? Hey, what’s that?
    • EN: Hold! What’s that over there?

※あれ can mean something like “what”, as if you are surprised or wondering “oh, what’s this”. I mainly wanted to point this out because Conan says it a bunch to lure Kogoro and others to a clue.

⑭窓（まど）いや　とびらかなーー？　でも　どうやっても開（ひら）かなぜ。

  • A window, no maybe a door–? But it won’t budge an inch.
    • EN: A window, or maybe a door? It won’t open.

※どうやっても means something like “no matter what”. When conjugated with a negative-form verb, it can express that something can’t happen no matter what. So Riku is trying to open this door but it won’t open.

🎮 I don’t know about anyone else but, I was wondering for the longest what was behind that door. Finally got to find out when I played 2.8 in 2018.

⑮チェッ　もっとすごいものが　あると思ったんだけどな。

  • Tch Thought it’d be something cooler down here.
    • EN: Geez, is that all that’s really in here?

⑯何にもないんだよ。こんなところには。

　なあ、ソラ。

　 ん？

  • Not in a place like this.
    • EN: What do you expect in a boring place like this?
  • Hey, Sora.
  • Hmm?

⑰おれ　もっと強（つよ）くなる。そしたらいっしょにこの島（しま）から外（そと）へ出（で）よう。

  • I’ll get even stronger. Then let’s leave the island and explore the world.
    • EN: When we grow up, let’s get off this island.

⑱こんなちっぽけな冒険（ぼうけん）じゃない。本当（ほんとう）の冒険しよう。

  • Not these boring kiddie adventures but an actual one.
    • EN: We’ll go on real adventures, not this kid stuff!

※ちっぽけ is a なーAdjective that means “little”. I’m glad that we both thought to turn it into something like these adventures being childish.

⑲うん　それもいいけどさあ。今すぐ面白いことないのかなあ。

  • Yeah, sure. But I wonder if there’s something fun we can do.
    • EN: Sure. But isn’t there anything fun to do now?

⑳そういえばさ。このあいだから村長（そんちょう）さんちに女の子（おんな　の　こ）がいるだろ？

  • That reminds me a girl started living in the mayor’s house the other day, right?

劇場版『名探偵コナン から紅の恋歌』

劇場版（げきじょうばん）

The word 劇場 consist of the kanji for drama or play and the kanji for place. So a place where a play is being done? Sounds like a theatre and that would be right. The 版 kanji means edition or version. So we have something like “theatre edition”.

Considering this is a Detective Conan movie it is best to change theatre to movie, or just shorten it to movie.

You’ll see this word quite a bit when you go see a movie adapted from a TV series or in this case an anime.

名探偵（めいたんてい）

I’ve explained 探偵 in a post before so I’ll drop that explanation below.

This is probably one of my most favorite words (mostly because of 名探偵コナン). It is the combination of the Kanji 探, which you may notice from the verb 探す, which means “to search for” or “to look for”, and 貞 means “spy”. So, put together you can make a good guess at what this word means. A spy that is looking for something. Hmmm… A detective.

But this isn’t just some ordinary detective. They added the kanji 名 before 探偵. You may be familiar with 名. It is usually recognized as “name”. However, there other ways to interpret it: “title”, “fame”, etc. Gotta love kanji.

So a Famous Detective? Or Great Detective?

コナン

Katakana is usually used for foreign words or names. This word is read as Conan. Like Arthur Conan Doyle. This is the name of the protagonist of the franchise.

I’ll just go with the familiar tile Detective Conan here.

So we have “Detective Conan the Movie:” so far.

から紅（韓 or 唐・くれない ＝ 韓紅 or 唐紅）

Wasn’t to sure on the kanji for から. Just found it strange not to dig into the kanji that the word could come from (when I first saw this I thought does mean “from crimson” XD)

From a previous post’s タイトルを見る, I mentioned that the kanji 紅 can mean “red”, “scarlet”, or “crimson”. However by adding から to 紅, it just means “crimson”.

の

We are dealing with the color crimson and the の particle. It wouldn’t make since to make it possessive in this situation.

For instance if you wanted a bow tie and someone asked you “what color?”, you could respond by saying “赤いの” or the red one. So in this case, we can leave out の altogether in the translation and keep “crimson” to go with our next word.

恋歌（こい・うた）

We have the kanji for “love”. Romantic love of course. The next kanji can be read as “song” or “poem”. So love song? Love poem? Considering a certain detective is tone death, I would go with the latter.

Altogether we have:

“Detective Conan Movie: Crimson Love Poem”

However, if you look closely, they have provided us with a way to read this word above the kanji. It says ラブレター or “Love Letter”. So final translation would be:

“Detective Conan Movie: Crimson Love Letter”

Pretty good. Couldn’t find a photo where they didn’t use Case Closed in the title. Wonder if they’ll ever revert that. Probably not.

Autumn, Karuta, and explosions. It all starts off with a rehearsal of a Karuta match and Nichiuri TV Station. But when a bomb threat is made, a string of murders begin to occur that are connected to Karuta cards with the word maple leaf “紅葉” in the poem. It’s up to Conan and Heiji to find out who the culprit is. Meanwhile, Kazuha faces off with a girl named Momiji in a game of Karuta. Momiji claims that that Heiji made a promise to her when they were younger. Something about getting married?!

If you are interested here’s a trailer and commercial for the movie.

This movie was in theaters (unfortunately never in the US) a month before I graduated from university. Finally got to watch it since Microsoft Store decided to get some of the recent movies. However, I don’t know if I’ll rent another one from them. Unless it’s dubbed.

Unfortunately, the subtitles were strange. The translation wasn’t off, it was the positioning of the subtitles. Constantly being put to the right of the screen. Wonder if I can watch the rest elsewhere. I’ll probably watch it again without subs before the rental expires.

I also found out it has a manga (2 volumes) and until 11/1 you can read the first volume for free on Book Walker. They also have the first 30 volumes for free during this time as well. I plan on owning all the volumes one day (have to get that brick-patterned wallpaper XD) but I think I’ll read as much as I can.

Really like this movie and it had another one of my favorite “couples(?)” in it (Kinda wish they’d get together already though). Everyone’s color design seemed a bit different (maybe darker) compared to the show. But hey that’s the movie magic (aka bigger budget).

The movie is set in Autumn so that adds a plus in my book. And to see Karuta in something other than Chihayafuru is wonderful sight to see. Didn’t know that they have furigana. Besides that, the culprit wasn’t that surprising considering they eliminated (almost literally) the other suspects. Sad reasoning behind the motive but it is to be expected of Detective Conan. Great action. Agasa joke was as cold as ever. So 8/10 for me.

Oh and of course they made Mai Kuraki do the ED for this movie (quite fitting):

REI’S JOURNAL

Oh, so this is a secret house. Since I’m the first one to find it, I got a prize. Guess Aki hasn’t been here. Darn, I don’t have enough room for it. I’ll just use this and that. Taught Kyoshoku Ice Beam and upgraded Headbutt to Skull Bash. The guy with the straw hat gave me HM 03 Surf. Taught that to Kyoshoku as well.

After leaving the Safari Zone, I found a man in a building. Couldn’t understand a word he was saying. Wait, he doesn’t have any teeth. Don’t tell me… I gave him the Gold Teeth. 

There his?! He didn’t even rinse them off. Kinda gross but okay. He gave me the HM 04 Strength.

Guess I’ll go train Hayattaka and Soreiyu on Route 15. There’s a lot of trainers I didn’t fight there.

日本語のイベント

ポケモンが好きです。色んなタイプがあります。でも、妖怪とポケモンは関連があるなんて、知りませんでした。ポケモン図鑑は恐ろしい詳しい内容があるけど、妖怪と日本昔ばなしの関係を本当に知りませんでした。

This grammar is used to deny that something isn’t believable by giving an example first. For instance, let’s say you know someone that doesn’t know Japanese.

When someone asks you if that person knows Japanese you could say something like, “That person can’t even say ‘good morning’ in Japanese, much less speak it”. I feel as though it has a sarcastic feel to it.

Verb-casual, non-past + どころか
いadjective + どころか
なadjective + (な)どころか
Noun + どころか

Ex: あのチューターはパイソンを手助けしているどころか、かえって混乱になっている。

　　(Far from being helpful, that program tutor is confusing me.)

Ex: アパートは広くて、明るいだけど、安いどころか、すっごく高いすぎ。

　　(The apartment is spacious and a lot of light gets in but, in fact it isn’t cheap, it’s too expensive.) 

Ex: あの子器用などころか、不器用な子だろう。

　　(That kid is far from coordinated, the kid is a klutz.)

Ex: 実は僕は漢字どころか、カタカナさえもきれいに書けない。

　　(Actually, I cannot even cleanly write katakana, let alone Kanji.) 

[どんなに～ても]

no matter how

The どんな・どんなに part can be thought of as How much. The ても part is stating regardless of what ever that “how much…” is.

This grammar expresses a conditional situation that depends on a certain amount (of action, a thing, or characteristic, etc.).

どんなに + Verb-てform + も
どんな + Noun + でも
どんなに + いadj + （－い）くても
どんなに + なadj + でも

Ex: もう時間がないんですよ。どんなに勉強しても、１００点は無理だって。

　　(There isn’t anytime left. No matter how much you study, you won’t get a 100.)

Ex: 彼はどんなバカでも、悪賢いやつだ。

　　(No matter how stupid he is, the guy’s pretty crafty.) 

Ex: 彼女はどんなに頭がよくても、騙されないでよ。

　　(Don’t let her fool you, no matter how smart she is.)

Ex: 君はどんなに不敵でも、このスタントが無茶だぞ。

　　(Don’t care how much of a dare devil you are, this stunt is reckless.)

The first kanji is used as a negative prefix such un- or non-. I’m guessing that the second kanji comes from the verb 足りる (“to be enough”). So something that is not enough.

対話

Two friends are wondering what they should do during Fall Break. But when one of them suggests playing a video game the other has a sneaky idea or two.

「ホラー苦手」

A:最近、日本語でゲームをしたかった。

B:え～本当。おすすめがある。コープスパーティーがいいよ。

A:コープスパーティー？げー。このタイトル覚えってる。アニメもう見た。

B:あ、それでいいよ。ストーリーもう知ってるから、大丈夫さ。

A:そんなジャンル苦手で、無理よ。

B:なんでこんなアニメを見てたの？

A:君のおかげさまで。

B:あ、悪かった。でも、顔が面白かった。

A:うせー。あ、そうだ。それは賭けだった。１０００円はどこ。

B:ちぇー。。。それは覚えったか。はい、はい、これ。

A:ケチ。ともかく、そんなゲーム無理だって。別のゲーム考えられるのか？

A:ふむ。。。いいけど、Ｓｔｅａｍでこのゲームを買う。アニメが大好きだから、ゲームも楽しいみたい。

B:そうだろう。一緒にしようよ。質問があれば、手伝うよ。

「I can’t handle scary stuff」

A: I’ve been wanting to play a video game in Japanese lately.

B: Eh~ really? Then I got something for you. How about Corpse Party? It’s good.

A: Corpse Party? Ugh-. I remember that. I watched the anime.

B: Then that’s great. You already know the story, so you’ll be fine.

A: Don’t really like that genre, so that’s going to be a no.

B: Why did you watch an anime like that in the first place anyway?

A: Thanks to you, I did.

B: Sorry about that. Your face was hilarious though.

A: Oh, shut up. Oh yeah. It was a bet. Where’s my 1000 Yen?

B: Tch-… So you remembered. Yeah, yeah. Here.

A: Geez you’re stingy. Anyway not playing that. Can you think of something else?

B: Uhh… how about When the-

A: Hell no. Didn’t I just say that horror is off limits?

B: My bad, my bad. Let me think. How about Steins;Gate?

A: Seems a bit hard for me, so I don’t think I’ll understand anything.

B: C’mon you passed the N2. Besides, if you have dictionary, you’ll be fine.

A: Hmm… I’ll go buy it on Steam. I’ve watched the anime so it’ll be fun.

B: Right. Let’s play it together. If you have any questions, I’ll help you out.

Auto Test Grading System Makes Teacher’s Job Easier

Last month, Gifu Prefecture’s Board of Education decided to use a system across all public schools in Gifu. This system will automatically score some test answers. This system has started being used this week.

The system has a code of correct answers with their corresponding score put in before the exam. Then with a scanner the student’s test answers can be automatically given a score.

It can also score questions that have written answers. It is also able to calculate the whole score. With this system put in place, the Board of Education thinks this will cut the time to grade tests by half.

The Board of Education stated that “The teachers have to take many test papers home and grade them. We believe with this system that teachers will have a easier time.”.

So it’s like a more advanced scantron. Interesting how it can also read written answers. I wonder to what degree it is able to do so. On top of that, I wonder if it can read bad hand writing or various types of writing.

実況から勉強する：キングダムハーツ

Time to wrap up Agrabah with a fight with Jafar the Genie. I’m kinda curious what the inside of lamp looks like. Guess Jafar will find out soon XD.

 ①ランプだ！ジャファーのランプをうばうんだ！

  • The lamp! We gotta take Jafar’s lamp!
    • EN: The lamp! Get Jafar’s lamp!

※うばうんだ, is a verb that means to rob 奪う. By adding ん to the end of the verb is a way to give an explanation. So here Aladdin is telling Sora and Donald that Since its Jafars Lamp we have to take the lamp from Iago to stop him.

🎮Really found this battle to be a pain. Have to follow Iago around while avoiding Jafar’s attacks. Then there’s all the moving platforms. Never tried to block the ball of magma(?) that he throws. As expected of Paradigm Shift.

②攻撃力（こうげきりょく）アップ！！

　最大（さいだい）HPがアップ！！

  •  Attack UP!!
  • Max HP UP!!

③魔人（まじん）ジャファー！ランプの中（なか）へ戻（もど）れ！

  • Jafar! Return to your lamp!
    • EN: Okay, Jafar! Back to your lamp!

※ Sora is commanding Jafar the Genie to return to the inside of the lamp here. 中 can mean inside and middle. 戻れ is the imperative form of 戻る which means to return or go back to.

②炎（ほむら・ほのお）の力（ちから）を手（て）にいれた！

  • Obtained the power of flame! 
    • EN: Attained the power of fire.

※ There are a few different readings for flame. If you ever watched Madoka Magica, then you are probably familiar with the one that reads Homura. There’s also another anime (not as good in my opinion) that is called Recca no Honoo or Flame of Recca.

③ファイアはファイラにパワーアップ！

  • Fire has powered up to Fira! 
    • EN: Fires has been upgraded to Fira.

🎮As you have seen before in a previous installment, when we acquire an element from a battle and we already have that spell, it will just get upgraded. It was quite fitting to get an increase in fire considering the location. Agrabah is hot and the desert is even hotter. Then you have the spot where the battle took place.

④アンサムレポート０を手にいれた！

  • Obtained Ansem Report 0!
    • EN: Obtained Ansem’s Report 1.

🎮When I first played the games I never really looked at the reports. However, when I checked it out, they have some interesting lore building in there. Hopefully one day I can play these games in Japanese myself so I can read them. Also find it strange that the JPN version started with Report 0.

⑤ジャスミン！？ジャスミン！！

　 逃（に）げたほうが良（よ）さそうな感（かん）じーー

　 ジャスミーン

  • Jasmine?! Jasmine!!
  • I think we should skedaddle–
    • EN: Whoa, we’d better get out of here!
  • Jasmiiiiine!

🎮One of the only keyholes that ends up setting off a trap.

※The ほうが良さそう comes from the grammar point ほうがいい which means “it’s best to do…”. It’s put with a verb in casual past tense （Ex: 逃げた/To run or escape）. The さそう is a grammar pattern that means “it seems”. For example おいしそう (that seems tasty). It expresses a feeling of uncertainty. A cake can look tasty but we won’t know until we try. This grammar usually used to give a first impression of a situation.

※The adjective いい has an exception to the そう grammar rule. Instead of いそう, it turns into 良さそう（よさそう）. This is also a way to conjugate いーAdjectives into なーAdjectives.

※感じ means feeling.

⑥。。。じゃあジャスミンは、アグラバーにはいないってことか？

  • Well, looks like Jasmine is no longer in Agrabah.
    • EN: So, Jasmine’s no longer in Agrabah.

⑦ソラ、いっしょにジャスミンをさがしにいこう！

  • Sora, let’s go find Jasmine!
    • EN: Sora, let’s go find her.

※探しに行こう is based of the grammar (V[drop ます]に行く) . This grammar suggests that the speaker is going somewhere to do something. For instance if you are planning on going to the store to buy the OLED Nintendo Switch you could say “OLEDスイッチを買いに行く”. 買う(to buy)⇒買います⇒買い＋に行く。

⑧。。。ごめん。つれていくわけにはいかないんだ。

  • Sorry. We can’t take you with us.
    • EN: Sorry. I can’t take you with me.

※わけにいかない is an expression that means “(due to circumstance) cannot be done”. つれていくor 連れていく is verb that means “to take someone (to someplace)” .

🎮Considering that Donald was so gung-ho about not letting Riku on the ship, I guess that’s why Sora is looking more down here. Not only can he not help Aladdin by bringing him along, he’s reminded of Riku in this instance.

⑨そんな。。。

　 なんだか、かわいそうだね。

  • Oh no…
    • EN: Wh-Why not?
  • This is a little sad.
    • EN: I sure wish we could…

※ かわいそう means pitiful, sad, or poor. You can use this when someone is going through a rough time like Aladdin is right now.

⑩しかたないよ。彼（かれ）をよその世界（せかい）につれていったら。。。

  • Nothing we can do about it. If we take him to another world…
    • EN: But we can’t. If we take him to another world, we would be…

※The たら that the end of the verb to take with(someone) つれていく, brings a conditional expression to the sentence. In other words, “if they were to take Aladdin with them then…” would be what Donald is expressing here.

⑪か。。。か。。。

　 干渉（かんしょう）！

  • Me… Medal…
    • EN: Muh… Mudd–
  • Meddling!
    • EN: Meddling!

⑫アラジン、俺（おれ）たちにまかせてよ。必（かな）ずジャスミンを助（たす）けるから。

  • Aladdin, let use take care of it. We’ll definitely save Jasmine.
    • EN: Aladdin, we’ll find Jasmine. I promise.

※A more common translation of まかせて・任せて (to entrust) would be “leave it to me” but I find this to be over used. It’s not wrong, there’s just other ways to bring the point across.

⑬落ち込むな（おちこむな）よ。まだひとつ願（ねが）いが残（のこ）ってるだろ？

  • Don’t get so down in the dumps. You still have one more wish right?
    • EN: Uh, Earth to Al. Hello? You still have one wish left.

※落ち込む is a verb that means “to feel down”. Genie is using the imperative negative form of this verb 落ち込むな. I know it gives a commanding feel but it can also be used in a casual sense. Just depends on tone and how close people are.

🎮In retrospect, they could’ve got 10 wishes here. If they would have let Sora, Goofy and Donald take a few turns with the lamp a lot of things could’ve been resolved here. But alas, we know how the story occurred in the movie so…

⑭ホラ　言（い）ってくれよ。ジャスミンを探（さが）してくれってさ。

　 僕（ぼく）は願うジーニーを自由（じゆう）の身（み）にしてくれ。

　 アル！

  • C’mon just say the word and I’ll go look for Jasmine.
    • EN: Look just say the word. Ask me find Jasmine for you.
  • I wish… for you to be free Genie.
    • EN: I… I wish… for your freedom Genie.
  • Al!

※ When you place the てーForm with 欲しい this is expresses something that you want someone else to do for you.

◎ I like how they translated this. It gives Hades more personality than what I came up with.

※あっさり is an adverb that can mean “easily”. 見捨てる is a verb that consists of the kanji from 見る, to see, and 捨てる, to throw away. I guess it is something like casting your sight away from something. If you are taking your eyes of something, you are abandoning it in some sense.

⑳俺は計画通（けいかくどお）り　プリンセスを連れてきただけだ。

　ハートレスにとりこまれた者（もの）救（すく）う（じゅう）はない。

  • I stuck to the plan and just took the princess with me.
    • EN: Hey, I did my part. I brought the princess, didn’t I?
  • There’s no way to save a person who has been taken over by the Heartless.
    • EN: Jafar was beyond help, consumed by his own hatred.

※とりこまれた・取り込まれた is the past tense of the verb 取り込む which means “To take in”.

    • EN: One should beware of letting it burn too fiercely.

※迎えに行って is an expression to go meet someone. 用意して comes from the noun 用意 which means preparation. It can be turned into a verb with する making it means to prepare.

  • My ships isn’t for passengers so I can’t guarantee a comfortable ride.
    • EN: Just remember, this is no pleasure cruise. It won’t be a pleasant voyage.

  • Why go so far for me– what’s the catch?

※狙い can mean aim. But within this context Riku is looking for what Maleficent is “aiming” for. In other words, what does she want in return. Riku’s right to be suspicious of her motives.

  • Catch? There isn’t one.
    • EN: Catch? What’s the catch?

※果たした is the past tense of the verb 果たす which means to accomplish or to carry out. So Maleficent has carried out her deal (約束=promise) which I guess she considers as proof that what she told him is true.

幽霊（ゆうれい）

The first kanji reminds me of the show  幽☆遊☆白書, (YuYu Hakusho). So that already puts me in the thought that it has something to do with ghosts.

The first kanji, 幽, can mean dark, seclude, confine to a room. etc. The second kanji, 霊, can mean things like spirit, soul and ghost.

So a secluded soul. A spirit in a confined room. Sounds like a ghost to me. Considering 霊 can also mean ghost, this isn’t too far from the truth. So we have “ghost”.

が

In this context, I think it is safe to assume that this が indicates the subject of the sentence. Let’s look at the next word to be sure and finish up the translation.

来（き）た

来た is the past-casual for of the irregular verb 来る. This verb means “to come”. So the past tense would be “to have come” or “to arrived”.

The reason it is irregular is because it doesn’t fit in the same boxes as a る-Verb and う-Verb when it gets conjugated.

For instance, if you assumed that 来る was a る verb, the negative form would be read as くない (If it was a う verb, then it would be read as くらない.) However it would be 来（こ）ない . Now back to the translation.

“To come” seems a bit meh to me. So I think I’ll go with “appeared” or “showed up”. It’s kinda like a Pokémon reference so I think I’ll go with appeared.

So simply it is:

This title comes from:

スライム倒して300年、知らないうちにレベルMAXになってました

Long title = Light Novel, huh?

The first word is the katakana word for Slime. 倒（たお）して is the てーForm of the verb “To defeat”. ３００年（さんびゃく・ねん） is 300 years. Still find it weird that reading of certain numbers depend on the number you start with.

So someone has been defeating Slimes for 300 years… okay?

知らない means don’t know. By adding うちに here (うちに means while).

Combining 知らない with うちに here makes it sound like you have done something without realizing or without knowing it. I like to think that it is another way to say 知らずに but I could be wrong there. Anyways, so far we have:

“Defeating Slimes for 300 year, without realizing”.

レベル is the katakana word for the English word “Level”. Together with MAX we can assume that this means Max Level or Level Maxed or Maxed out level. The final piece なってました is the active-polite-past form of the verb なる (to become).

Really? So altogether this is looking like:

“I’ve Been Defeating Slimes for 300 years, Without Realizing I Maxed Out My Level”

なる　（てーForm）ー＞なって (make it polite)ー＞なってます (make it past tense) ー＞なっていました.

You can make it this even more casual by dropping the い in なっていました。And we end up with なってました. I think I can leave this out of the translation considering the message is already clear and we know that someone has maxed out their level by defeating slimes for 300 years.

The official translation is not too far off the point:

I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years and Maxed Out My Level

Even though it is an Isekai, I’m enjoying this anime.

It starts off with a hard and realistic concern that plagues the work place: Death by overwork (Also known as 過労死（かろうし）.

The main plot is simply the title. We have our main protagonist who’s been isekai’d, Azusa, who has been killing slimes for 300 years. She then walks into town one day and nonchalantly checks her level (which she hasn’t done since the beginning of her new isekai’d life). She’s only been killing slimes these past 300 years while helping the town’s people, so surely she’s still a weakling, right?

Nope! She finds out that she has maxed out her level at 99. It gets out that she’s OP and this is where her slow life starts to get more hectic.

REI’S JOURNAL

Fuchsia City has a Safari Zone. Looks like I can catch Pokémon here. Wonder what’s in there. I have to use special poke balls called Safari balls. Since I plan on only catching one, I don’t need 30 of these. Wait I can’t use my Pokémon?! They gave me rocks and bait… how the heck am I supposed to catch anything with this?!

I ran into a Nidoran♀ and a Nidorina. After finding TM 37 a Cubone appeared. Gave it some bait. After throwing 2 Safari balls, I caught it. Nice! Such a sad Pokemon. I’ll give it happy name. Maybe Taiyou? Nah… Soreiyu sounds better. Plus it has my name in there. It seems after 300 steps, that’s it. Ran out of time. How do they track my steps? Is there a step counter on the Safari balls?

I want to explore more so I’ll pay again. Ran out of time again. Seems like I’ve almost seen everything. One more time. Found some Pokémon I’ve never seen before. Wish I could catch them. That Tauros looks cool. I found some Gold Teeth? Who lost these?! I reluctantly put them in my bag. Oh, there’s a house out here. Wonder why? Better check it out.

Used to express something similar to なるべく, which means “as much as possible”. However だけ can be used for adjectives and nouns.

The first kanji can mean toil, diligent, or much as possible. While the second kanji can mean power, strength, or exert. So you our exerting yourself to do something. You are making the effort.

Mako: Wow~ it tastes spicy and sweet. I’ll take this one. 
Sana: I’ll have the Cherry Bomb.
Jin: Would you like a cone or a cup?
Mako and Sana: A cup, please.
Jin: Yes. They’re 300 yen each.
Sana: Oh, separate please.
Jin: Thank you very much.

  • The Cave of Wonder’s tiger head is being controlled by the Heartless. Eliminate the dark power to save it!
    • EN: The tiger head is being controlled by the Heartless. Crush the power of darkness!

※操られている（あやつられている）is the “ing” verb form of “To control”. 打ち破って（うちやぶって）is the て-Form of “To destroy” or “To eliminate”. The てーForm here let’s you combine this verb with another verb by using and.

    • Aspir is a spell that shows up in Final Fantasy and Bravely Default Games. It takes MP from enemies. Considering you are taking damage to get this MP, I think it’s safe to say that this is what the English version calls MP Rage.

※底 means bottom. When something is paired with なし it usually means without. So 底なし literally means “without a bottom”. The EN version used chamber instead of room. Guessing to give it less of a literal sense.

  • It appears he doesn’t know about us.

※存在 means existence. The ようだ that Jafar uses here, can be used to express that something seems to be the case.

  • EN: Why not explain the situation to that boy Riku?

※ Sora’s literally asking if she’s the Witch Maleficent here. On top of that he’s using the rude “you” pronoun.

※ The ぬ at the end of いかぬ is an archaic way to use a negative verb. You usually find people who are scholarly or old saying it in anime and games. There is also an expression, そうはいかない, which means “not a chance” or “That’s not going to happen”.

  • The seven princesses that hold the power to open the door!
    • EN: One of seven who somehow hold the key to opening the door.

※Jafar says 叩きのめす here which means to beat someone until they are unable to stand or to knock down. Find it a bit funny that we both went with “call the shots”. Genie is actually explaining that he has to because “the one who holds the lamp is the master”.

※ わし is a pronoun that is usually used by elderly males. It has a very archaic sense to it. The なーadjective 無敵 means invincible, unrivaled or unrivalled. The 同じ part was excluded from both translations, but it means “same”. This means that Jafar wants to be an invincible genie just like well… Genie.

Well, Jafar just screwed himself here. Really should’ve wished to be an all powerful sorcerer instead. Less of loophole factor with a wish like that. Look like we’ll be wrapping up Agrabah soon.

果て無き墓標

果て（はて）

The kanji has many meanings: fruit, carry out, end, finish, etc. But when put together with て, it becomes the word for “the end” or “the limit”.

無き（なき）

無き is a suffix that means “-less”, “lacking” or “non-existing”. So put together with 果て and you get “The Endless”

墓標（ぼひょう）

The first kanji 墓 means “gravesite” or “tomb”. The second kanji 標 has a few meanings. I’ll only explain two of them. One meaning is an abbreviated term from the religion Shinto. They are ropes that are put on the tori gate to ward off evil spirits like in the picture below.

The second meaning that is most likely what we are dealing with is “mark” or “sign”. So in a literal sense, this word means “grave marker”. A better translation would be “gravestone”.

So all together we have The Endless Gravestones. Made gravestone plural here for it to make more sense. Endless Gravestone would just sound like a gravestone that encircles the world or a gravestone that has been around for many years maybe(?).

Endless Gravestones makes it sound like the gravestones (aka deaths) are endless. Which kind of holds true for the story that this title comes from.

And that was right on the money. I love that they went through the trouble to get the typeset for the English title.

This title comes from a (relatively) old anime called Claymore. I’m almost halfway through the show and it’s pretty good. It tells the story of these women who have to face off with these creatures called Yoma. Yoma disguise themselves as humans and eats them.

Fortunately, these women (who people call Claymores) can sense who is a Yoma and who is not. There job is to slay these monsters. Unfortunately, they have been turned into something half-human and half-Yoma in order to do this job.

I’m watching this dubbed. The sub is good but I wanted to take a break from Japanese in some of the shows I’m watching. Raki has Natsu’s VA and the claymores have good VAs, so I have nothing really bad to say about the dub. The show is also set in a medieval kind of setting so I thought English would be a better fit here.

サイクリングロードでまだゾッキタイプのあいつらを挑んだ。ポケモンなら、あいつらとロケット団が同じ。マンキー、ベトベター、マタドガスなどがいる。あ、禿のこいつはオコリザルがいた。他のはゴーリキー。タイプバリエーションがないだがな。

無茶急なロード。下に乗りやすいだが、上がめちゃ乗りにくい。ハヤッタカは自分でワンリキーを倒した。よしゃ！オニドリルに進化した！

あ、驚いた。こいつはビリビリダマがいる。やはり、自爆しやがって。イッコケセイに入れかえってよかった。

眠そうなゾッキと戦った。あいつはドガースとマタドガスがたくさんいる。簡単に倒した。それで雷族の全員倒した。

ポケモンセンターに行かなきゃ。セキチクシティに行ったことがあるので、そこに飛んで皆を回復する。

Still taking on the biker gang on Cycling Road. When it comes to Pokémon, these guys are as bad as Team Rocket. They only have Pokémon like Mankey, Grimer, and Weezing. Oh, this bald guy had a Primeape. Another one had a Machoke. But still they don’t have type variation.

This road is so steep. It’s easy to ride down but hard to ride up. Hayattaka took down a Machop by itself. Alright Hayattaka evolved into a Fearow.

What a surprise someone had a Voltorb. As expected it blew up. Good thing I switched to Ikkokesei.

I fought a tired looking biker. He had a bunch of Koffing and Weezing. Took him down easily. Well, guess that’s everyone. The biker gang has been taken down.

Gotta go to a Pokémon Center. Since I’ve been to Fuchsia City, I can fly there and heal everyone. Should buy more potions, too. I used them all here.
