Hello everyone! Kyuusei here to teach you Japanese and show what I find interesting about Japan. With that being said, let’s continue.

GRAMMAR NOTES

[てましょ]

This grammar point is used to say that something has been completely done. This grammar is usually combined with verbs like end (終（お）わてしましょ) or finish (終（お）えってしましょ).

Ex:　きょうのブロッグをすませてしまったら、マンガを読んでアニメを見ます。

(When I have completely finished today’s blog, I will read manga and watch anime.)

Ex:　野菜を食べてしまうまでに、ケーキを食べてはいけません。

(You may not eat the cake until you have finished eating your vegetables.)

[てしまう]

This grammar point is used to show that you regret something. Or it can be used to say that something has happened or will happen, and it will end horribly if it does. It can also mean that you did something by accident.

Ex: 今日のしゅくだいを忘れてしまいました。

(I forgot today’s homework. [and I regret it.])

Ex:　リポートをデリートしてしまった。

(I deleted the report (by accident).)

トピックスを答えましようか

A classmate is holding a box. Ask what it is.

それは何ですか。

You are at a department store. Ask the sales associate how much is that red bike over there.

あの赤い自転車はいくらですか。

You are trying to find the post office. Ask a stranger where it is.

すみません、ゆうびんきょうくはどこですか。

Your friends have invited you to a new restaurant. Ask the waiter for a menu.

すみません、メニューをお願いします。

Oh no! You found a wallet after class. People are heading towards the door. Find out whose wallet it is.

これは誰の財布ですか。

A person you just met says that he is a student and his major is history. Tell him that your friend Makoto is a history major, too.

友達のマコトのせんこうも歴史です。

Someone asks you if you are a high school student. Correct this person by telling them that you are actually a freshman of Tokyo University.

高校生ではありません、東京大学の一年生です。

Ah, there is an umbrella left at the door in your college department. Ask professor Kazuko if that umbrella over there belongs to her.

JLPT N5 VERBS

いる – To Need
1. 何もいらない。

I don’t need anything.

いるものを忘れないでください。

Don’t forget the things you need.

いる – To be, to exist
- 僕がいるから、安心してください。

I am here so don’t worry.

なぜ人間がいますか。

Why do humans exist?

入れる（いれる）– To put
- １００円コインに入れてください。

Please put in a 100 – yen coin.

おもちゃはどこに入れるの。

Where do you put your toys?

歌う（うたう）– To sing
- 声が下手だから、歌いたくないです。

Since my voice is bad, I don’t want to sing.

カラオケバーでアニメOPを歌いましょう。

Let’s sing anime openings at a karaoke bar.

生まれる（うまれる）– To be born
- ドイツに生まれました。

I was born in Germany.

どこに生まれました。

Where were you born?

売る（うる）– To sell
- 車と家を売った、日本に行きました。

I sold my car and house and went to Japan.

何か売りたいの。

Do you want to sell something?

A:アイザイアさん、まだ日本に行きたいですか。

B:はい、そうです。おもしろい県間と思います。

A:じゃ、日本で何かしたいですか。

B:和食を食べたり、秋葉原に行ったり、将棋をプレーしたり、富士山に登ってみたいです。

B:はい。日本はとてもきれいです。楽しみに。

B: Yes. Japan is very beautiful. I’m looking forward to it.

B: Yeah, let’s go.

A: What do you want to eat. They have many different things.

B: Uh… what is this?

A: Shiroi Koibito.

B: What is a Shiroi Koibito?

A: It’s a pastry. You want to try it.

B: Yeah… Ah, it’s delicious.

ヒビキのにっき

まったく、ぬいぐるみが勝手に動きました。。。うわー怖い。。。ポルターガイスト❢（なんてね。ダサいなあ。=_=）。ったくこのポケモン。。。動かないでよ。よし、取って、ポケモンに気づかれてしまった❢　ボルトスタート❢ゲンガーだ。口が大きいなあ。おもしろかった。なんてな。この試練は怖くない。あれ？そのピカチュまた見たよ。このスーパーでピカチュは何をしているの？電気タイプポケモンじゃないか。たぶんまた跡をつける。

このピカチュウはビルの裏に行きました。行きましょう。え。。。このルームは色々なピカチュウの品物がある。え？！一体なに？！ピカチュウじゃないけど、ちょっとに似ている。まず、びっくりしたけど、このポケモンはちょっとかわいいです。ミミキュウは助けを呼んだ！ゴーストがいる。まずにミミキュウを倒すべきだ。このポケモンは助けてを読んでがほしくない。うるさいんだ。ちょっと大変だったけど、僕たちはミミキュウを倒した。

やばい！ゴーストはさいみんじゅつの技を使う。ビヤコを寝てしまった。入れかえらないと。クラヒゲ、たのむ！すごいふいうちだ。よし、みんなよくできました。ふん。。。ミミキュウがどこかに行きました。じゃ、写真を取ったから、いいかも。試練が終えった。それに、誰も死んでいません。これらの試練はどんどん簡単ね。

HIBIKI’S JOURNAL

Geez, now dolls are moving all by themselves. Oh, so scary (heh this is lame =_=). Stop moving around Gengar. It was bit hard, but I took a picture of Gengar. Well that was entertaining. Just kidding. This trial isn’t scary at all. Huh? That Pikachu again. What is it doing in a place like this? It’s an electric type Pokémon. I guess I should follow it.

It’s went to the back of the building. What is with all this Pikachu stuff. What the heck is that?! It looks like Pikachu. Although it did scare me a bit at first, it’s kinda cute. It called a Haunter for help. Better take out Mimikyu first. I don’t want it calling for more allies. It can get annoying. It was sort of tough but, Mimikyu was taken down.

Crap! Haunter used hypnosis. Now Biyako is asleep. I have to switch. Kurohige, I leave the rest to you! Awesome Sucker Punch! All right good job guys. Hmm? Mimikyu disappeared somewhere… Well I got the picture, so I guess it’s fine. I completed the trial. Plus no one died. These trials are starting to get too easy.

日本語はちょっと難しいけど、楽しいだと思います。最近、考えています。僕は小説やマンガやアニメやドラマで日本語を勉強しているべきかも。よくないとか？いいとか？どっちの方がいいですか。分かりませんけど、やってみます。今日、僕は最初のドラマは「イタズラなキス」を見ます。　　　　　　　

アメリカのJLPTがキャンセルされたとしても、まだ勉強しています。それわけで、今、ゆっくり勉強して始めています。色々で日本語を勉強するについて、

全部が複雑だと思います。小説、アニメも、ドラマも、マンガも（あ、そうだ、歌も）：全部は役割語を使います。

とにかく、宇多田ヒカルの新しい歌が来ました。MVも来ました。見てください。いい歌だと思います。

GRAMMAR NOTES

[かどうか]

This grammar is used when you are uncertain about a result. For example, you studied hard for a test, but you don’t know whether or not you passed.

This grammar point is used at the end of the sentence with 分かりませんor知りません.

For verbs you just use the regular form of the verb + かどうか + 分かりません・知りません.

For nouns and adjectives, use the noun or adjective + かどうか + 分かりません・知りません.

Simple, right?

Ex: このテストを失敗するかどうか分かりません。

(I don’t know if I will fail this test.)

[ようと～まいと]

But what if you know that you are certain about something but, it depends on whether or not something occurs. For example, you are certain you will go home whether it rains or not.

Volitional form (よう)と + まいと

Ex: 雨が降ろうと降るまいと帰ります。

(I’ll go home whether it rains or not.)

[かわりに]

This grammar point is used to say, “instead of”. If using a noun before this grammar point you must have の after the noun. If it is a verb just use the regular form of the verb.

Ex: ワンピースで日本語を勉強するかわりに、テキストだけで日本語を勉強するべきですよ。（なんてね。笑）

(Instead of studying Japanese with One Piece, you should study Japanese only with textbooks.)

トピックスを答えましようか

You are at a STEM meeting and our curious about a new acquaintance’s major. Ask Ms. Iino if her major is physics.

飯野さんのせんこうはぶつりがくですか。

Your friend asks you about Mr. Li. Tell him that she is your friend from high school and that he is Chinese.

李さんは高校の友達です。中国人です。

You are out with a new friend named Rei. You want to go out for drinks but since he looks so young you wonder if he can. Ask him if he is 20 years old.

玲さんは20歳ですか。

A stranger has asked for the time. Tell them that it’s 5:27 now.

今5時２７分です。

Ask your friend Nozomi if her father is a police officer.

希さんのお父さんは警察（けいさつ）ですか。

Ms. Davis is not from America, so you ask her what nationality she is.

デイビスさんは何人ですか。

You meet your new nephew. Ask how old he is.

いくつのか。

You and an acquaintance are leaving Japan. You both want to know where the other is from to send letters and maybe visit someday. Ask where he/she is from.

JLPT N5 VERBS

洗う（あらう）- To wash
1. 皿を洗ってもらえませんか。

Can you wash the dishes for me?

ごめん、今日は暑いから、髪を洗わないと。だから、今夜出かけたくない。

Sorry, it was hot today, so I have to wash my hair. So, I don’t want to go out tonight.

有る（ある）- To be, To exist
- この古い町がまだ有ります。

This old town still exists.

その公園には花が有ります。

There are flowers in that park.

ある – To have
- まだ最初のうでとけいがあります。

I still have my first wristwatch.

宇多田ヒカルの新しい歌がありますか。

Do you have Utada Hikaru’s new song?

歩く（あるく）- To walk
- 毎日外で歩いてれば、もっとも体力があります。

If I walk outside every day, I will have more stamina.

一日中歩いたから、疲れたんでした。

Since I walked all day, I am tired.

言う（いう）- To say, To tell
- 彼女はいつも「問題ないし」と言っています。

She’s always saying, “No problem”.

僕は彼に「えと。。。日本語でしゃべっていますけど。。。」と言ったけど、彼は僕とまだ英語でしゃべっています。

I told him “Um… but I am speaking Japanese” but, he’s still talking to me in English.

行く（いく）- To go
- 日本に行きたいんですが、日本語が下手です。

I want to go to Japan but, my Japanese is bad.

スーパーに行って、買い物しました。

I went to the supermarket and shopped.

DIALOGUES

[日本に行きたい]

A:さ、アイザイア、どこに旅行したいですか。

B:えと。。。ドイツやフランスや、それと、日本です。

A:え、なぜドイツですか。

B:生まれたんです。

C:かっこいいでしょう。知りませんでした。

A:本当？え、私も知りませんでした。

B:はい、お父さんは軍隊にいるんでした。

C:あ、私も。いま、お父さんはイギリスにいます。あ、日本に行きたいですか？日本語をもっと上手になるんですか。

B:はい、もちろん。東谷さんは日本に行きましたかね。

A: はい、そうです。来年の夏、また行きます。二人共が暇なら、良かったら、一緒に行きませんか。

BとC：ぜひもちろんです。

[口が寂しい]

A:私はペコペコ。

B:どこで食べたい。

A:ピザがいいと思う。

C: Ah, mine too. He’s in England right now. Ah, so you want to go to Japan. Is it because you want to get better at Japanese?

B: Yes, of course. Touya, you went to Japan, right?

A: Yes, that is right. I’ll go again next summer. If you both are free, and if you’d like to, how about we go together?

B and C: By all means, of course.

[I’m feeling peckish.]

A: I’m starving.

B: Where do you want to eat?

A: Pizza sounds good.

B: Well I’ll put in an order on the phone. What kind of topping do you want?

A: Pineapple, please.

B: Eh, really? That’s strange topping. You don’t want a more normal topping?

A: That is normal.

B: Yeah, yeah. (Half cheese, half pineapple for sure.)

僕たちは14番道路に戻った。雨が降っているけど、釣りましょう。どんなポケモンがいますかなあ。本当？！コイキングだった。なぜコイキングなんよ？お、そうだ。このコイキングはもうすぐギャラドスになるから、問題ないしかも。僕は君にカグラを呼む。よし、次の試練を始めましょう。そう、僕はゴーストタイプポケモンの写真を取らないとだけ。それだけ？簡単だろう。さ、行きましょう！

わーこの場所がちょっと感じ悪い。この音楽は一体何だろうか。この店のハロウィーン🎃の音楽？あ、ベルトコンベヤーがなぜだか動き出した。。。すごい。写真を取るよ。あ、ゴースだった。バトルが始まるよ。ビヤコに信じているよ！彼のDDラリアットが強いすぎる。さ、それは終わった。。。ちょっと待って．．．ピカチュを見っただけだろうか。ちょっとペールだった。ふん、変だなあ。とにかく、続けましょう！

おー、ショッピングカートが一人で動き出した。。。あ、怖い～。なんて。たぶんまたゴーストポケモンだろう。ね、カオリの友達がいたずら好きなよ。ゴーストはビヤコのDDラリアットに速く倒れられた。え？あのペールピカチュまた来たねえ。どこに行っている。跡をつけるべきかも。掴みたいんだ。あ、そうだ、試練をしながら、ポケモンを掴んでことができないだっけ。くそ。試練の後で、そのピカチュがここにいるかも。

HIBIKI’S JOURNAL

We are back on Route 14. It’s raining but let’s go fishing. I wonder what kind of Pokémon it will be. Really?! A Magikarp. Why did it have to be a Magikarp? It’ll become a Gyarados soon, so I guess its not a problem. I’ll name you Kagura. All right let the next trial begin. So, I all I have to do is take pictures of Ghost type Pokémon? That’s it? Sounds easy. Now let’s go!

This place is bit creepy. What is with this music. Is this the store’s Halloween track? Ah, the conveyer belt is moving all by itself. Neat. I’ll take the picture. It was a Ghastly. The battle is about to start. I know you can do it, Biyako! His Dark Lariat is too strong. Now that that is over… wait a minute… did I just see a Pikachu? It was a bit pale. Hmm… weird. Anyways, let’s continue!

Oh, a shopping cart started moving all on its own. Oooh, so scary. Must be another Ghost Pokémon. Hey, Kaori, your friends are mischievous. Biyako quickly defeated Haunter with a Darkest Lariat. Huh? That pale Pikachu appeared again. Where is it going? Better follow it. I want to catch one. Oh right, I can’t catch Pokémon while I’m doing the trial. Darn it. Maybe it will be here after the trial.

日本語の練習第35週 Japanese Practice Week 35

Hello everyone! Kyuusei here to teach you Japanese and show what I find interesting about Japan. With that being said, let’s continue.

日本語のイベント

漫画がよく読みます。毎週少年ジャンプを読みます。子供の時、千鳥とカメハメハを練習しました。大人になったも、まだ漫画を読んでいます。初めての漫画は「るろうに剣心」でした。しかし、お母さんは2巻目を買いました。変でしょう。続きを読みませんでした。

今３好きな漫画を読んでいます。「ボルト」、「タイムパラドクスゴーストライター」、それと、「サマータイムレンダ」。

「ボルト」

『ナルト』が好きだったから、「ボルト」を速く読んで、アニメアダプテーションも速く見ていました。このアニメはまあまあだったけど、最近、おもしろかったと思う。この漫画もおもしろいと思うけど、毎月のシリーズ。残念ですね。

「タイムパラドクスゴーストライター」

タイムトラベルが大好きです。そういえば、この漫画は「STEINS;GATE」に似ていると思う。ネタバレしたくないけど、読み見て。

「サマータイムレンダ」

この漫画は少女漫画に似ているけど、ほかのタイムトラベル漫画です。今年読み始めました。ネタバレしたくないけど、これも読み見て。

とにかく、あおきゆたを知っていますか。それとも、日本人の男の人ゆたを知っていますか。彼は日本人のユーチューバーです。彼はおもしろい動画を作ります。最近、彼の「アニメっぽい日本語」動画が好きです。見てください。

GRAMMAR NOTES

[としても]

This grammar point is used for hypothetical situations. It can be translated to “Even if…” or “hypothetically, if…”. Using conjunction can also help you emphasize a certain hypothetical situation as well so use them how you like. For instance, in the first example below.

Ex: 草摩夾：楽羅、地球で最後の女の人だったとしても、結婚しません。

(Kyou Souma: Kagura, even if you were the last woman on Earth, I wouldn’t marry you.)

夾君はそのせりふをいえば、楽羅ちゃんは。。。

最近、あたらしいフルーツバスケットを見ます。あの怖い（かわいいけど）彼女を覚えていない。

[たとえ]

This grammar point also be translated to “Even if”. But it has a different way of being used. This is to emphasize “Even if”. Use it when you want to get a point across. You may have also heard something slightly different from this word called “たとえば” which is usually translated to “For example, …”. あ、ホモニムが好き（数寄？笑）です。

Ex:たとえ俺は落ちても、あきらめない、だってばよ❢　⇐アニメっぽい。

(Even if I fall, I won’t give up!)

You got a notice that there will be a new Japanese podcast starting at 8 tomorrow. Find out if it’s 8:00 am or pm.

午前8時とか？午後8時とか。

Yuki is talking about his siblings. Find out what his eldest sister’s job is.

Find out Professor Kazuko’s phone number.

カズコ先生の電話番号は何ですか。

Your acquaintance asked about your friend, Mei. Tell him/her that Mei’s mother is Australian, and her father is Chinese.

メイさんのお母さんはオーストラリア人です。そして、お父さんは中国人です。

You have just met someone for the first time at a party. What will you say to the person? What if it was in a business meeting?

初めました。どうぞよろしく。/ 初めました。どうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

You have been asked what your friend, Hibiki does for a living. Tell him that he is a part timer at a bookstore.

ヒビキは本屋でパートタイマーです。

Tell a new member that the Shogi club is at 11:30 am.

将棋部は11時半です。

Find out if Ms. Erika is an international student of Stanford University.

JLPT N5 VERBS

I am making a list of verbs that may pop up on the JLPT N5 test with two example sentences. I’ll start out with six.

会うーあう- To meet

一番近い駅で友達に会いました。

(I met my friends at the nearest station.)

知らない人と会いたくない。

(I don’t want to meet a stranger.)

開く／空くーあく – To open (by itself)

窓が開きました。怖いでしょう。

(The window opened (by itself). Isn’t that scary.)

電車のドアが開きました。

(The train’s door opened (by itself).)

開けるーあける (to open)

わー暑いから、窓を開けてください。

(Wow, since its hot, please open the window.)

ドアを開けて、出かけました。

(I opened the door and went out.)

あげる (to give)

ドイツに行って、アメリカからお土産をあげます。

(I will go to Germany and give them souvenirs from America.)

おねえちゃんは僕にお金をあげました。

(My sister gave me the money.)

遊ぶーあそぶ (to play)

子供の時、いつも遊んでいました。

(When I was a kid, I always played.)

彼がひどいから、彼と遊んでいません。

(I’m not playing with him because he is mean.)

浴びるーあびる (to take a shower)

今晩はシャワーを浴びたり、日本語を勉強したり、本を読んだり、寝ました。

(Tonight, I took a shower, study Japanese, read a book, and went to sleep.)

シャワーを浴びるとき、たくさん考えます。

(When I take a shower, I think a lot.)

DIALOGUES

みんな:カンパイ！

B:ユリコ、ウイスキーが好きですか。

A:おウイスキーはちょっと。。。

C:あ、そうですか。じゃ、何が好きですか。

A:ビールとレッドワインがいいです。

B:マジですか。知りませんか。

A:お酒をあまり飲みませんから。

C:それじゃ、おいー！

Everyone: Kampai!

B: Yuriko, do you like whiskey?

C: Oh, is that so? Then, what do you like?

A: What is shouchu?

B: Are you serious? You don’t know?

A: I don’t drink much alcohol.

C: Well then, hey!

D: Yes. What’s your order?

C: Three shochu, please.

D: Understood.

A: Kyaa!

B: Ayumi-chan, what’s wrong?!

A: I dropped a plate.

B: Are you hurt?

A: No, I’m okay.

B: Ugh-.

A: What’s the matter, brother?

B: That isn’t Dad’s favorite plate, is it?

A: Ah, it is. What should I do, brother?

B: Let’s go see Dad and apologize.

A: But! Dad will get angry.

B: If you don’t, he’ll get angry. I’ll be there, so it’ll be fine. I’ll apologize with you. But first, let’s clean this up.

A: Yeah. Thank you, brother.

今、１４番道路にいます。つまり、新しい道路です。さ、新しいポケモンを掴みましょう。ここは暗いですね。まずに、次の試練に探しましょう。あ、そこに来た。スーパー・メガやす　跡地。このところは次の試練ですね。え。キャプテンがここにいないから、試練をやれない。いいよ、どこかに行きます。もう、そのキャプテンは何をしていますか。

エーテルハウスに届いた。子供は急に勝負したい。子供たちはエーテルハウスを守ります。バトルは速く終えって、アセロラさんはここに届いた。彼女はここに何をしていますか。やっぱり、アセロラさんはキャプテンです。（アセロラさんはうっとうしいそう人から、ゴーストタイプな試練が完璧なタイプですね。）ところで、彼女は何をしていましたかなあ。買い物していた？！マジで。。。

HIBIKI’S JOURNAL

I am now on route 14. In other words, a new route. So, let’s catch a new Pokémon. It sure is dark here. Let’s look for the next trial. Oh, I’m here– the abandoned supermarket. This is the next trial. Huh? I can’t do the trial if the captain isn’t here. Fine, I’ll go somewhere else. Geez, what is that captain doing?

I arrived at Aether House. Suddenly, a kid wanted to battle me. They are protecting the house. The battle was over quickly, and Acerola arrived. As expected, she is the captain. (She has a very gloomy presence so maybe a ghost type trial is perfect for her.) By the way, I wonder what she was doing? Shopping?! Really…

When I left Aether House, Lillie was being harassed by a Team Skull Grunt. When will they learn? He only has one Pokémon?! This is too easy. After the battle Lillie gave me 5 Luxury Balls. Thanks. She is going to rest at Aether House. As for me, I’m going to the next trial. Acerola wants to guide me there but, I already know where it is. Lillie should probably become a trainer. Hau and I are not always with her. Anyway, back to the abandoned market. I wonder what kind of ghost Pokémon there are.

日本語のイベント

さっき悪いアニメを見た。昨日、アイスを見た。そのアニメは３長いエピソードだけです。しかし、分かりにくかったと思う。古いけど、ほかのもっと古いアニメをたくさん見た。PPMはお金があんまりなかったかなあ。それなれば、しょうがないね。

今朝、JKめしを見た。フラッシュでアニメを作ったのか。彼女たちは時々おもしろい会話があるけど、彼女たちは変な料理を作った。たとえば、飴ライス。飴はごはんの上にある。一体なんだそれ？！

新しいポッドキャストを聞くはじめました。日本語コンテッペイというのことです。主審者なれば、聞いてください。

GRAMMAR NOTES

[かな]

This is used when you are wondering thinking about something. It used at the end of the sentence. Just replace with です／だ. Furthermore, it is most often lengthened to かんなあ. Kind of how ねis lengthened out to ねえ.

Ex: このケーキを食べるべきかなあ。(I wonder if I should eat this cake.)

[かしら]

This grammar point is interchangeable with かな. However, it is mostly used by females.

Ex: あの彼女は敵かしら。相棒かしら。(I wonder if that girl is an enemy or an ally.)

[ても]

Use て-form + も. This grammar is used to assume the first statement is true. It translates to such things as “Although/Even though/If”

Ex: 毎日勉強しても、漢字を読めない。(Although I study every day, I can’t read Kanji.)

This is a new segment I would like to try out. I will be providing situations that you can get into and provide an answer to the situation in Japanese (it will mostly be in polite speech). I will start writing up a few situations for now. These will be relatively simpler but will progress in difficulty as I go along.

You are waiting at the bus station. Your phone is dead, you don’t have your watch, and there are no clocks in sight. A stranger sits next to you. Ask the stranger for the time and if they know the bus schedule.

すみません。今何時ですか。それに、バススケジュールを知っていますか。

Your classmate brought a souvenir from a trip. Thank them and ask how the trip went.

ありがとう。旅行はどうでしたか？

You are at a business party. There is an interesting person at the party you want to speak to, but alas you don’t their name. Ask them what their name is.

お名前は何ですか？

Someone at the business party just asked if you are a graduate student. How would you respond if you are a college student?

いいえ、大学生です。

You just sat down with a student at the library to study Japanese. This is supposedly his second time taking this course. Ask your classmate which year of college he/she is in.

I guess I didn’t get that lost. Oh, it’s Hau. He completed the trial, too. Speaking of rivals, Gladion is here, too. So, Team Skull is looking for Nebby. He wants us to protect Nebby. I am a bit surprised but okay I’ll do that. (Wait haven’t we already been doing that?) If Team Skull is looking for Nebby, then Lillie is also in danger. I guess we must protect them. If that is the case, we must get stronger. Well I’m on Route 13 now. What is this old man talking about? Haina Desert is like a maze. Stones… 2143. What is that about? I should write these numbers down for later.

I have arrived in Tapu Village. Ah, construction workers are here. They are working on building the Pokémon League on the mountain. Looking forward to it. Let’s go to the Pokémon Center and heal my Pokémon. It is a cold and rainy day, so I’ll have some Tapu Cocoa (We are in Tapu Village, after all.). Before I left the village, I talked to a girl about the abandoned department store. She says it has many Ghost-type Pokémon and if I went in there, I would never come out. Sounds scary but okay. I still must go.

PROGRESS

It is time to refocus. So, I have been influenced by Cal Newport’s “So Good They Can’t Ignore You” 3-step plan. Perhaps this will help others as well. Goal, Strategy, Habits. These are the three keys that I will try to implement to get to where I want to be in my hobbies and learning.

Goals need to be challenging realistic and have a deadline. Don’t have them be so broad (ex: I want to be fluent in Japanese by the beginning of Winter.) because these goals will burn you out and add stress to things you want to do. It may even want you to quit entirely.

Just as you shouldn’t make too broad goals you shouldn’t make them too specific (ex: master writing the “depression” kanji.) because these goals will seem too easy and can be done within a few days or so. Plus, you would just be learning something too small for your needs in learning the language (or any subject for that matter).

In short, shoot for a goal that is between that spectrum. The same can be said for strategy and habits to meet that goal. The following will be my plan set out to learn Japanese.

GOAL

I want my fluency to be on the JLPT N4 level by the end of October. Not just memorizing all the vocabulary but being able to utilize these kanji, words and grammar in writing and speaking. Furthermore, I would like to improve upon listening and reading comprehension.

STRATEGY

Spend an hour or two focusing on Japanese each day. Anything for this blog does not count. This should be the fruit of that labor and a progress report of how I have come along (I’m sure that I have improved compared to my very first post… right?).

HABITS

Stick to three days out of week writing blog.

Kanji practice (I want to know stroke order and be able to read at least 2 readings for each Kanji):

Write 5 new Kanji out with brush pen ten times every day.
Go through JA Sensei Kanji recognition drills three times a week.
Write Kanji on JA Sensei App 3 times a week.

Lingodeer:

Two lessons three times a week.
Practice speaking in each lesson.
Make at least five sentences from each lesson.

Use Genki Vol. 1 and 2 for review:

Read out loud each dialogue.
Do practice from the back of the book.
Review vocabulary in each lesson.

Listen to three Japanese Podcasts a week.

Follow MIT Japanese 1 & 2 assignments for extra practice.

GRAMMAR NOTES

[られれば・れば　Conditional Can Form]

るーVerb➔られれば

Ex:　彼女は恋人とレストランで食べられれば、幸せです。

(If she can eat with her boyfriend at the restaurant, she will be happy.)

うーVerb➔Conjugate end of verb to E, then + れば

Ex:　先生は僕の筆跡を読めれば、安心しました。

(My teacher was relieved to read my handwriting.)

する➔すれば

Ex:　毎日勉強すれば、テストが大丈夫です。

(If you study every day, you will do fine on the test.)

来る➔来れば

Ex:　秋葉原に来れば、お金がたくさんあっておいてばいい。

(If you come to Akihabara, be sure to have a lot of money.)

Negative Form

Conjugate end of verb to the corresponding A form, then + なければ

Ex:　漢字の読み書きができらなければ、日本語は難しいです。

(If you can’t read and write Kanji, Japanese is difficult. )

Ex:　空気を読まなければ、大変ですよ。

(If you can’t read the room, it will be troublesome.)

Ex:　夕べ料理をすらなければ、レストランで食べましょう。

(If you can’t cook tonight, let’s eat at a restaurant.)

Ex:　パーティーに来なければ、また明日ね。

(If you can’t come to the party, I’ll see you tomorrow.)

あ、面白い。マリエ市はキビダンゴの顔ハメパネルがあります。さ、11番道路に出発！ここにどんなポケモンを掴むかな。ここはトレーナーがいっぱいだけど、全部を倒した。アリアドスを掴んで予定たけど、僕のポケモンが強いすぎる！コチャマは弱い技を使ったくせに、アリアドスが倒れた。クイックボールを使うべきだった。１２番道路にはゴーストタイプな試練があります。キャプテンは誰かな。

お、ハプ。僕を探していた？なんで？彼女はバンバドロダッシュを書き記しました。でも。。。僕はもうバンバドロがいますよ。。。コチャマです。コチャマは道を歩けます。あ、カプの村には次の試練があります。うん、分かった。ヤバイ、ここには狭い道がたくさんあります。リリィちゃんではないけど、迷子になりたくないよ。コチャマはイシツブテを戦っていました。そのポケモンはじばくの技を使った。は！コチャマはあんまり怪我をしない。

もう掴んでいたポケモンはだんだんいる。いつ新しいポケモンを見るーわ！エレキッドが来た！絶対に掴みたい！長いバトルですが、ウルトラボールとエレキッドを掴んだ。ウルトラボールとエレキッドを掴みたいから、エレキッドの色とウルトラボールの色が同じですね。ついに、電気タイプポケモンがいる。今日から、君はビリビリレキ申しますよ。

えと。。。迷子と思う。ウラウラビーチにいます。なんでヤドンがたくさんいるのか。あ、そうだ、新しいポケモンが掴める。それに、トレーナーがたくさんいます。ここにいるから、釣って泳ぎましょう！やった！ケイコウオを掴んだ。えと。。。君の名は。。。キャモメはこのポケモンを狩る。。。じゃ、君の名はハンタークロシ。ここにはパールが多いですね。これを売ったら、お金たくさんがある。迷子になってよかったかも。

HIBIKI’S JOURNAL

Ah, they have a cut out of Kibidango in town. Cool. Now off to route 11. I wonder what Pokémon I can catch here. There are a lot of trainers here, but I defeated all trainers on this route. Tried to catch an Ariados, but my Pokémon are too strong. Even though I used a weak move, Kochama took Ariados down. I should have used a quick ball. There is a ghost type trial on Route 12. I wonder who the captain is.

Oh Hapu. You were looking for me? Why? She registered a Mudsdale to the Ride Pager. But I already have a Mudsdale… her name is Kochama. She can walk on the rough road. Ah so the next trial is in Tapu Village. Got it. Oh, there are a lot of narrow roads here. I am not Lillie, but I hope I don’t get lost. Kochama was fighting a Geodude. That Geodude used Self-Destruct. Hah! Kochama was barely hurt.

I keep running into Pokémon I already captured. When will I see a new Pokémon- Wow! An Elekid! I totally want to catch this no matter what! It was a long battle, but I caught it with an Ultra Ball. I wanted to catch it with an Ultra Ball because Elekid looks like an Ultra Ball. I finally have an electric type Pokémon. I will name you Biribirireki (Biribiri is the onomatopoeia for shock while reki is short for ereki which means electricity. )

Um… I think I am lost. I’m on a secluded shore. Why are there so many Slowpoke here? Oh, I can catch a new Pokémon here. Plus, there trainers that I can battle. Since I’m here, let’s go fishing and swimming! Yay, I caught a Finneon. Let’s see… your name will be… Wingull hunt these Pokémon… so your name will be… Hantakuroshi. There sure are a lot of pearls hidden on this shore. If I sell them, I can get a lot of money. I guess it is a good thing that I got lost.

GRAMMAR NOTES

[たらどう・たらいい]

These grammar points are used to make suggestions or to invite someone to do something.

Ex: 居酒屋に行ったらどう。・居酒屋に行ったらいい。(How about going to an Izakaya? ・Why don’t we go to an Izakaya?)

[もし]

This is used to note a hypothetical situation.

Ex: もし勇気があったら、僕は君に真気持ちを言います。(If I had the courage, I would tell you my true feelings.)

[もしよかったら]

This is a polite expression that basically translates to “if it is okay with you, …”, but is usually shortened down to “if it is okay”. This is used to check and see if you are not being a bother or to see if someone is free to do something with you.

Ex: もしよかったら、一緒に勉強しましょうか。(If it is okay, shall we study together?)

ついに、僕はククイ博士の作戦を見ます。なんてな。なぜ僕はこいつを戦うのか？ちょっと待って。ガズマはスコル団のボスだ。それで、彼を倒したら、彼らはスコル団を辞めますかも。ガズマは僕に「君はなぜこのトライアルチャレンジをしますか。」と言った。。僕も同じを考えますが、ポケモンリーグチャンピオンになりたいだ。それだけだ。さ、来い！え？！彼はポケモンが二引きだけいますが、他のトレーナーよりガズマの方が強いだ。ビヤコも、イケトビコも、クロヒゲも、そして、キビダンゴがほぼ死んでいました！ガズマのグソクムシャのシェルブレードが強いすぎる！強かったですが、僕たちは彼のポケモンを倒した。誰も死なないだよかった。それはチャレンジだね。

くそ！彼らはスコル団は辞めない。彼はもっと強いポケモンがいる？！とにかく、ククイ博士は僕にガオがエンZをもらった。ありがとう。僕も何ものをあげます。え？本当？君はまだアイデンティティを隠したい？とても明白なアイデンティティだよ。

リリィちゃんとアセロラマリエ庭園に届いた。次のトライアルは11番道路だ。アセロラは「迷ったら、警官に道を尋ねてください。」と言った。却下！僕はもう警官に道を尋ねました。彼は僕に勝負したい。だから、却下。この市に戻る時、ポケットモンスターに行ってよかった。今、ポケモンセンターに戻ってゆっくり休む。それから、11番道路に行ってきます！

HIBIKI’S JOURNAL

Now that Kochama is healed let’s fly to Maile City. Professor Kukui is going to be so surprised when he sees this mask. Ugh. It’s the Skull Grunts again. If you don’t want your pride to be damaged, leave this place. Why is my cousin picking a fight with these idiots? Well it’s the best plan that he takes them down. If that’s the case, maybe they’ll quit Team Skull. Eh? Who’s the old geezer wearing the strange sunglasses. Guzma? That’s a strange name. Oh. So, he’s the boss of Team Skull.

I finally get see Kukui’s strategy. Or not. Why do I have to battle this guy? Wait a minute. Guzma is Team Skull’s boss. So, if I beat him, Team Skull will probably disband. Guzma asked me “What is the point of doing the Island Challenge.”. I’m wondering the same thing, but I want to become the Pokémon Champion. That is all. Alright, bring it! Eh?! He only has two Pokémon, but he is stronger than other trainers I have fought. Biyako, Iketobiko, Kurohige, and Kibidango almost died! His Golisopod’s razor shell is too strong! This guy was strong, but I beat him. Thank goodness no one died T_T. That was a challenge.

Darn it! They are not going to disband. Anyways, Professor Kukui gave me Incinium Z. Thanks. I have something for you as well. Eh? Really. You still want to hide your identity? It’s an obvious identity.

Lillie and Acerola have arrived in the garden. The next trial is on Route 11. Acerola said, “if you get lost, ask a police officer for directions.”. No way! I already tried to ask a police officer. He wanted a Pokémon battle. So, no way. I’m glad I went to Pokémon center when I returned to this city. All my Pokémon would have probably died. Now, I must head back to the Pokémon Center and take a good rest. Then, we are off to Route 11!

日本語のイベント

父は手紙を手に入れて良かった。父は週に１回郵便をチェックします。ちょっと緊張しました。昨日、父と一緒に話しました。

今月、アニメをたくさん見ました。

「落第騎士の英雄譚」は珍しいアニメだと思う。強くない主人公？このアニメハーレムではない？ちがいます。主人公は恋人がいる。それに、このアニメはライトノベルを翻案したものだ？すごい。このアニメの生徒会長がとてもかっこいい。

「鬼滅の刃」は美しいアニメだと思う。今月、このアニメは最高のアニメを見たかも。かっこいいアクションシーンが多い、面白いストーリー。そして、ユニークキャラデザイン。去年、「鬼滅の刃」の漫画は終わりましたから、読むかも。それに、「鬼滅の刃」の映画はたぶん見てできません。鬼舞辻無惨。。。彼はマイケル・ジャクソンに似ているね。

「ダンベル何キロ持てる？」はとても教育的なアニメだ。運動が好きだから、このアニメはもう面白そう思おう。時々、キャラクターの顔がやりすぎだった。彼女たちの顔はジョジョキャラクターに似ていた。

とにかく、キングダムハーツのプレイスルーを見る予定だ。このプレイスルーは楽しい経験だと思う。それに、このゲームを何度もプレイしましたから、たぶん大丈夫だ。このプレイスルーはアニメを見ているような感じになるだけど。

GRAMMAR NOTES

[たら]

This is one of the most common ways to say “if”. An interesting thing about this grammar point is that it uses the past tense て-form + ら.

For る- Verb =

Drop る + たら

Ex: 考えたら、文法は一番複雑です。

(If you think about it, grammar is the most complex.)

For う- Verb =

・う、つ、る➔ったら

・む、ぶ、ぬ➔んだら

・く➔いたら

・ぐ➔いだら

・す➔した

Ex: 新しいパソコンを買ったら、ゲームをもっとプレーしてできます。

(If you buy a new PC, you can play more games.)

Ex: 外で遊んだら、元気になりますよ。

(If you play outside, you’ll feel better.)

Ex: 日本語で書いたら、日本語を上手になりますよ。

(If you write in Japanese, you will get better at Japanese.)

Ex: 急いだら、失敗しますよ。

(If you hurry, you will fail.)

Ex: 大切なものを無くしたら、悲しいです。

(If you lose something important, it’s sad.

(For a better translation: It’s sad to lose something important.)

For irregular verbs =

・する➔したら

・来る➔来たら

Ex: それをしたら、許しません。

(If you do that, I won’t forgive you.)

Ex: 家に来たら、晩ご飯を作ってあげる。

(If you come to my house, I’ll cook dinner for you.)

For ending a sentence =

・です➔だったら

・である➔であったら

・でした➔でしたら

Ex: だったら、何。

(Then what? Note: You can hear this sometimes in anime, video games, and manga.)

Ex: 自信であったら、ここにいませんだろう。

(If I was confident, I wouldn’t be here.)

Ex: 暇でしたら、今、日本語を勉強していませんでした。

(If I was free, I wouldn’t be studying Japanese right now.)

それで、マーマネ君はぬしポケモンを呼んでいるデバイスを作った。ぬしポケモンこいこいマーク2っていうです。面白いそうです。マーマネ君は天才だ。さすがマーマネ君だね。なんてね。マーマネ君はそのデバイスをつけたの時に、電気が消した。そのデバイスは電気を多量に消費しまたね。それに、ドアは電気が使うので、ドアが開かない。つまり、僕たち出かけてできません。彼はフラッシュライトさえ持ってないよ。慌てない。慌てないよ。え。。。クイズゲームか？正しい答えてを選ばないと。それから、ドアが開く。よし、これは楽しいかも。

くそ！ドアが開くの時に、ポケモンはどんどん来るよ。そして、ポケモンを倒したの時に、このドアが閉める。ウザイだ。ポケモンを三匹倒した。それから、ぬしポケモンが来た！このポケモンはクワガンオンっていうですね。かっこいそうだ。いつか、このポケモンを掴みますかな。とにかく、コチャマ、頼むよ！わ～、コチャマはこのポケモンを速く倒した。じめんタイプなポケモンがすごいだ。あっ、電気が戻った。今、僕たちはここに出かけてできます。マーマネ君、そのデバイスを直してください。

HIBIKI’S JOURNAL

So, Sophocles made a device to call the Totem Pokémon. It is called Ping Totem Pokémon 2.0. Sounds interesting. He is a genius. Or not. The lights went out when he turned the device on. Plus, since the doors run on electricity, we can’t leave this room. He doesn’t even have a flashlight. Don’t panic. Don’t panic. A quiz game, huh? I must choose the right answer so the doors will open. Okay, this might be fun.

Darn it. When the door opens, Pokémon keep appearing. Then, after I defeat the Pokémon, the door closes. Annoying. I defeated three Pokémon. Ah, the Totem Pokémon is here! Vikavolt, huh? Looks cool. I wonder if I could get one someday. Anyway, Kochama, I’m counting on you! Wow, Kochama defeated them quickly. Ground type Pokémon are awesome. Ah, the power is back on. Now we can leave. Sophocles, please work on that device.

I got an Electrium Z from Sophocles. Then, Molayne gave me Steelium Z. Molayne also gave me a mask. This mask look familiar… wait a minute. I knew Professor Kukui was Wrestler Royal! I guess I’ll go back to Malie Garden and give this mask to Professor Kukui. Oh, Professor Kukui, it’s time to explain your wrestling career.

日本語のイベント

今日は父の日です。この日はみんなのお父さんを祝います。プレゼント、大好きな食べ物、お父さんと一緒にどこかに行く。父に手紙を書いました。あの手紙と父の大好きなレストランのギフトカードに出しました。伯父さんもプレゼントを出しました。伯父さんは新しいスリッパがほしいから、買いました。伯父さんは「あ、このスリッパは柔らかい」と言った。お父さんはコロラドに住んでいるし働くし。だから、お父さんに電話をかける。

とにかく、ドイツ語も勉強し始める。日本語よりドイツ語の方が簡単だと思う。しかし、日本語の方が一番楽しいと思う。弟はドイツ語がペラペラだ。今、彼は日本語を勉強します。面白いだ。偶然だね。

GRAMMAR NOTES

[Idiomatic Expressions]

Idiomatic expressions are used to discuss things in figurative meaning that are understood by a native speaker. For example, 「一石二鳥」means “One stone two birds” which can be translated to English as “Killing two birds with one stone”. This can be taken to mean you can succeed in two things (two birds) by just doing one thing (one stone).

Ex: これで僕は人気がある。(This will make me popular.)

Ex: どういうことですか？ (What are you talking about?)

Ex: ユーチューバーになります。(I will become a YouTuber.)

Ex: あ、そういうことです。(Oh, so that is what you’re talking about.)

As seen above, there are other usages for some of these that I’d like to share. Try these phrases out some time:

どういうこと？(What are you talking about?)

そういうことですか。(So that’s what you are saying.)

DIALOGUES

A:　ね、今からすごいこと言っていいの？

B:　いいけど。

A:　じゃ、ポケモンをプレイした、ね。

B:　うん。

A:　それに、主人公はお父さんがいない。変だね。

ククイ博士と一緒にホクラニ天文台に届いた。ここはホクラニ山の上にある。ククイ博士によると、アローラ地方でホクラニ山は二番に高い山。面白い。いつか一番高い山に行きたい。ラナキラマウンテンだね。あ、ポケモンリーグがあるのか。すごい。今、きっと行きたいな。チャンピオンになる。あ、しまった。ポケットモンスターに行くのを忘れた。トレーナーを勝負している前に、そこにいきないと。

それと、ここにポケモンを掴むかな。あ、ここだ。一体どんなポケモンですか。やばい！このポケモンはじばくを使った❢そのポケモンは「メテノ」と申しました。びっくりでした。カオリが死んでいたと思った。カオリはゴーストタイプポケモンでよかった。僕のポケモンがもっと強くになったけど、強いトレーナーともっと勝負したい。ちょっと待って．．．そのイシツブテは髪と眉毛がある？！この地方が変だね。山の上ですべてのトレーナーを倒した。それは簡単すぎだろう。アキラのアブソルあんまりつよくない。まいいか。

今、天文台の中に行こう。マーレインに出会った。ポケモンセンターにいる人によると、ムーレインさんはアローラ地方のパソコンに作った。それに、彼もキャプテンだったけど、今、マーマネ君はキャプテンだ。さ、マーレインさんの力を見せてよ。え？！このダグトリオは。。。髪がある？！　あ、そのメタングがかっこいいそう。マーレインさんは悪くないトレーナーだ。彼はちょっと強い。さ、マーマネ君に会いましょう。わあ、ここはとてもハイテクなところだけど、箱が多いだ。マーマネ君はどこかな。僕はきっと彼を見つける。

HIBIKI’S JOURNAL

Professor Kukui and I have arrived at Hokulani Observatory. This place is on top of Hokulani Mountain. According to Professor Kukui, Mount Hokulani is the second tallest mountain in Alola. Interesting. I want to go to the tallest mountain someday. Mount Lanakila, huh? Oh, so the Pokémon League is there? Cool. I definitely want to go now. I will become the champion. Oh crap. I forgot to go to the Pokémon Center. I must head there before battling trainers.

I wonder if I can catch a Pokémon here. Ah, here’s one. What the heck kind of Pokémon is this? Ah this Pokémon is using self-destruct. That Pokémon was called Minotaur. That scared me. I thought Kaori was going to die. Thank goodness Kaori is a ghost type Pokémon. My Pokémon are getting much stronger, but I want to battle more trainers. Wait did that Geodude have hair? This region is strange. I defeated all trainers on the mountain. That was too easy. Even Akira’s Absol wasn’t that strong. Oh well.

Now let’s go to the observatory. I met Molayne. He created the computer system in Alola. He was a Captain, but Sophocles is the Captain now. Let’s see how strong the Molayne is. Eh?! This Dugtrio… has hair?! Oh, that Metang looks cool. Molayne isn’t a bad trainer. He was bit strong. Now let’s go see Sophocles. Wow this place is very high-tech, but there are a lot of boxes. I wonder where Sophocles could be. I’ll find him for sure.

日本語のイベント

先週の水曜日、その歯医者に行った。歯医者は親知らずを八個抜きました。「珍しいケース」と言った。口の中に痛い。頭が痛くてグルグルだ。薬のせいのか？僕は早くすぎ起きたのか？おそらく両方だ。スープとアップルソースを飲んだ。食欲がないのだけど、薬を飲まないとから、食べ物を食べないと。最近、日本語や法化学やパイソンを勉強しませんでした。勉強しないとけど、今は勉強しにくいだ。それに、運動してできない。水曜日から今までちょっと悪いだ。

とにかく、火曜日、新しい筆ペンが来ます。書道を気になります。

Grammar Notes

[というのは]

As you will remember from last time とis like a quotation marker. Add this together with いう can be translated to say or to call. This grammar point comes after the subject that you want more information on. For example,

Ex: あの男の人が声優だというのは嘘だろう。(That man isn’t really a “voice actor”, right?)

In this sentence you are curious if this person is a voice actor or not. So, you in this case you are using [というのは] to get more information.

[ということは]

This is similar to [というのは] and it works in the same way as well. Another way you can use this grammar point though, is using it to clarify a topic that is being discussed.

Ex: 戦争だということは何ですか。(What is “war”?)

Note: You can also use a more casual form: [っていうのは・っていうこと].

Also, from these grammar points you can pull [どういう意味・という意味] to sound more natural when asking and answering questions. This translates to “what does “ ” mean” and “this is what ” ” means” respectively.

Ex: ポケモンっていうのはどういう意味ですか。(What does “Pokémon” mean?)

ポケットモンスターっていう意味です。(It means “Pocket Monster”.)

とにかく、リリィちゃんを見つけないと。あ、リリィちゃんは図書館の前にいた。奇跡だ。彼女は古い本に探しています。不思議な女の子は私たちに手伝ってもらいました。じゃ、読みましょう。。。。太陽のビーストか。。。月のビーストか。。。まさか、ウルトラビーストのか？！すごい。童話似ていたけど、おそらく事実みたいですね。さ、10番道路に行こう。

電気タイプポケモンは次のトライアルにいますか。じゃ、コチャマ、よろしく！この道路にはオニドリルがたくさんいます。は～弱くて頭が悪いスコル団のしたっぱ。いつ習うのかよ？！10番道路のトレーナーも弱いけど、お前たちは執拗だ！よし、決めた。この団を速く倒しないと。あ、ビヤコはしんかんしていた！かっこいそうだ！れすらーみたい！そして、彼はDDラリアットを習ていた！偉い！偉い、ビヤコ！

とにかく、なぜおまえたちはバス停を取ってつもりのカ。こいつ！さ、ククイ博士とホクラニ天文台にいきます。もっと強いトレーナーを戦い。え、ククイ博士、リーグって何？「あとで」と言いましたか。じゃ、いいけど。

Hibiki’s Journal

I arrived at Malie Garden with Hau. This place has a big lake. I wonder if I’ll swim in the lake with Lapras. I wonder what kind of Pokémon are here. I’m getting excited! Oh, right. Where is Professor Kukui, again? Lillie might be with Professor Kukui. Oh, found him, but Lillie is not here. He was at the ice cream shop. Hokulani Mountain is the next place, huh?

Ah, Lillie … hey, I have a question. Will you answer me? Huh, you want to go the library. Well, let’s go together. Wait a minute. Ah, she’s gone. That girl always gets lost. Geez. Hapu was there too! Hapu, it’s been a while. Look, Kochama, you became a Mudsdale. I’m so proud of you!

Anyway, I have to find Lillie. Oh, Lillie was in front of the library. It’s a miracle. She is looking for an old book. A strange girl helped us. Well, let’s read it… beast of the sun? … beast of the moon? … No way, Ultra Beasts?! Wow. This book was similar to a fairy tale, but it’s probably true. Well, let’s go to route 10.

Are there electric type Pokémon in the next trial? Well, Kochama, I’ll leave it to you! There are a lot of Fearow on this route. Sigh It’s the weak and unintelligent Skull gang grunts. When will you learn?! The trainers on route 10 are also weak, but you guys are persistent! All right, I’ve decided. I have to take this group down fast. Oh, Biyako is evolving! Looks cool! Looks like a wrestler! And he learned DD Lariat! Great! That’s great, Biyako!

Hello everyone! Kyuusei here to teach you Japanese and show what I find interesting about Japan. With that being said, let’s continue.

日本語のイベント

先週はとても忙しいでした。従妹のために、引っ越してあげました。6時に始めました。10時に家に帰った。一人で重い物を運んでいた。従妹の彼氏が来てよかった。もっと速くし。疲れたから、勉強しにくいと思う。でも、頑張って勉強しました。

アマゾンでT8ドライバーと新しいパジャマを取り寄せました。先週の水曜日に来た。PS4は埃っぽいから、PS4は動作していませんでした。だから、T8ドライバーとキュチップでPS4を直して掃除した。できた！今、もっとゲームをします。本当に嬉しかったです。

それに、ペルソナ5ザ・ロヤルとドラゴンボールファイターズはいまセールので、速く買いました。そして、ファイナルファンタジー７リメイクデモをプレイしました。楽しいから、いつかたぶん買います。それとも、ユーチューブでプレイスルーを見ます。

あ、そ、そ、ホビーロビーで筆ペンと万年筆を買いました。この筆ペンが好きので、これから、漢字をもっと書きます。筆ペンのことビデオを見つけました。書道をたぶん習うのは楽しいです。それに、僕の手書きはちょっと下手だと思います。

Grammar Notes

[Particleと ]

This particle is frequently used within the Japanese Event and Hibiki’s Journal segments so I think (と思う) it would be best to know (と知る) them, I would like to say (と言う).

と思う＝Think that

と知る＝Know that

と言う＝Say that

For い-adj add と= to ___ that it is い-adj

For な-adj/noun, add だと= to ___ that it is な-adj/noun

Ex: あのアイスはまずいと思います。(I think that ice cream is disgusting.)

Ex: あの名探偵と知ります。彼の名前はコナン。(I know that great detective. His name is Conan.)

Ex: 友達は「良かったら、一緒に遊園地に行きませんか。」と言いました。(My friend said, “do you want to go to the amusement park together?”)

If you’d like to sound more casual around family or friends, you can drop the と/だとentirely. Next I will introduce another way to say the same thing.

On the opposite end of sounding more casual, there is being more formal (aka vaguer = more polite). You can accomplish this by using the passive voice we learned earlier.

と思われました＝It is Thought that

と知られました＝It is Known that

と言われました＝It is Said that

Ex: 日本ではチップが必要じゃないだと思われました。(It is thought that tipping is not necessary.)

Ex: 風邪を引いてれば、マスクを着けるが必要だと知られました。(If you have a cold, it is known to wear a mask.)

Ex: アメリカより日本の方が安全だと言われました。(It is said that Japan is safer than America.)

The way these verbs are conjugated says to the listener that there is an expected way to do things. Or you wanted to tell someone what another person has said or thinks but want to name the person. But why not be more straightforward? This is teaching us a bit more of how the culture is in Japan.

It is a custom to have somewhat of a collectivistic way of thinking. Meaning that the group holds more priority over the individual. Meaning that to keep the peace of the whole it is best to read between the lines and sometimes speak in a vague way.

It has its benefits and its issues just like any other mindset. However, with this type of mindset, you can probably better understand the mindset of collectivistic societies in other countries as well (Japan, China, India, Russia, Brazil, Egypt, etc.) if you come from a more individualistic country.

[って]

This is the same as theとparticle. It is thought to be the shorter version of that particle. It is often used with 言う. [って] is also often dropped due to just wanting to sound more casual.

Ex: 待って！止まって！止まってって言うだ！(Wait! Stop! I said stop!)

B: え？見たい。

A: うん、いいよ。この彫像は何に似ているの？

Zach: Oh, Akane. I’m playing the Final Fantasy Seven Demo.

Akane: Planning on buying it?

Zach: Yeah, probably.

Akane: That’s a waste.

Zach: Huh, why’s that?

Akane: The game is $60 and it’s not the whole game. I think there will be two more.

Zach: That’s expensive but I think I’ll still buy it.

Akane: Have you played Final Fantasy 7 before?

Zach: No, but Aeris is cute.

Akane: You poor thing. Good luck.

Zach: Huh?

ハノハノリゾートへ行きました。その前に、ハノハノビーチに行った。美少女は僕にサイコソーダをもらいた。間接キスって何？気持ち悪い。。。いらない。クロヒゲはヒトでマンを速く倒した。だから、ここにポケモンをもう捕まえませんでした。六匹ナマコブシは海に戻ってあげましたから、僕の給与は二万円！じゃ、ハノハノリゾートに行こう。

エーテル財団のチフに会いました。彼の名前はザオボーだ。エーテルパラダイスツアー？うん、僕は行く。ハウーくんも行きたいのか。さ、行こう。どんなポケモンを見ていますかな。ビッケに出会った。すごく嬉しいだと思う。彼女は僕とハウー君にツアーをしてもらいます。

僕たちはエーテル財団の会長に出会った。リリィ似ていると思う。彼女はルザミーネと申します。沸かそう。いくつのかなあ？40歳？！まさか、リリィの母？！ついに、不思議なポケモンに来た。ウルトラホールポケモン？！ウルトラビースト？！それはクラゲ似ている。くそ！捕まえたいけど、ここにはポケモンモンスターボールジャマーがある。あ、ウルトラビーストを消えた。あの。。。ルザミーネさんの笑顔がなんか変だろう？彼女はウルトラビーストも守りたいと言うけど、ルザミーネさんはちょっと怪しいだね。

とにかく、ウラウラじまに行きます。ハウー君が勝負を仕掛けてきた？えと。。。なぜ？あなたはまだポケモンが三匹いますよ。ハウー君はもっと強くなるけど、私たちの勝利だ！あ、そうだ。ククイ博士と僕たちはマリエ庭園似に合わないとね。さ、行こう。それに、リリィちゃんはルザミーネさんのことを聞きます。そして、リリィちゃん、あなたはホシグモちゃんとどこに出合った。

Hibiki’s Journal

We went too Hanohano Resort. Before that, we went to Hanohano Beach. The beautiful girl gave a soda pop. Uh, what is an indirect kiss? Disgusting… I don’t need it. Kurohige quickly defeated Starmy. So, I can’t catch Pokémon here anymore. Because I returned 6 Pyukumuku to the sea, my pay is 20,000 yen! Well, let’s go to the Hanohano Resort.

I met with the Aether Foundation Chief again. His name is Sauboh. An Aether Paradise Tour? Yeah, I’ll go. Hau wants to go too? Let’s go. I wonder what kind of Pokémon I’ll see. I met Wicke. I think she is very beautiful. She took Hau and I on a tour.

We met the Aether Foundation’s president. I think she looks like Lillie. Her name is Luzamine. She seems young. I wonder how old she is. 40?! No way is she Lillie’s mother?! Suddenly, a mysterious Pokémon appeared. Ultra-Hole Pokémon?! Ultra-Beast?! It’s like a jellyfish. Darn! I want to catch it, but there’s a Pokéball Jammer here. Oh, it disappeared. Uh… Ms. Luzamine’s smile is sort of strange, isn’t it? She says she wants to protect the Ultra Beasts, but Ms. Luzamine is bit suspicious, right.

On another note, I’m going to Ula’ula Island. Hau challenged me to a battle. Uh… why? You still have three Pokémon. Hau has gotten stronger, but it’s our victory! Oh, yeah right. We must meet Professor Kukui at Marie Gardens. Let’s go. Besides, that I will ask Lillie about Ms. Luzamine. And, Lillie, where did you meet Nebby.
