日本語の練習 第90週 Japanese Practice Week 90

2021年08月15日「日」第90週

Hello everyone! Wow, 90 weeks of doing this blog. Just 10 more weeks till the 100th. If things go right, it will be around the same time as the 100th volume of Detective Conan.

But anyway, Kyuusei is back to teach you some Japanese and show what I find interesting about Japan. With that being said, let’s continue.

Seeming to be…

There are two usages of this grammar.

One is where the speaker is comparing something to something else.

The second usage is when you aren’t too sure of something so you are making a guess or assuming something.

V[Plain-Form] +ようだ

いーAdj+ようだ

なーAdj+なようだ

N+のようだ

Ex: 今能力試験N1を受けたら、あの試験に合格できたのが、夢のようですね。

Ex: 日本の夏は一番熱いようです

(It appears that Japan’s summer is the hottest.)

[ように・ような]

As, like, as though

Used pretty much like the grammar point above. It’s mostly used for the second meaning though. As if you have a gut feeling or a hunch about something.

V[Casual] +ように/ような

Ex: どうしたの、がっかりするようですね。

(What’s the matter? You seem disappointed.)

Ex: しまった。交差点で事故があったようです。Uターンしよう。

(Crap. Looks as though there was a traffic accident at the intersection. I’ll make a U-turn.)

Sora: Tch. Whatever. If you say so, I’ll forgive that idiot.

Airi: Thanks, Sora.

Sora: Yeah yeah.

Airi: Once is good enough.

Sora: What are you, my mother? Anyway, I’ll wait only five minutes. Then, let’s go.

Airi: Rena-chan will definitely come.

Sora: Well, how about a bet. If Rena comes in five minutes, then I’ll carry both of your bags.

Airi: Sure. It’s kind of heavy. Sora, are you gonna be alright?

Sora: I’ll be fine. I’m a guy after all.

Airi: …

Sora: Say something.

Airi: Hahah. Sorry. I just wanted to tease you a bit.

I think I’ve been beaten by it once or twice but it’s not that hard to beat once you know it’s attack patterns. Besides with RPGs I kinda got into the habit of over leveling and end up curb stomping a lot of enemies throughout the game.

Well, the boys are out of the jungle and back in space. Looks like they are traversing to the town where they met. On another note, I like how Donald just let’s Sora pilot the ship in Kingdom Hearts 2 after denying him in this game.

ヒトリゴト

小さい町に住んでいます。ここに育ちました。田舎ですから、何をするのことがあまらいないけど、趣味があれば、大丈夫です。モールがない、映画館が悪い。でも交通が忙しくないです。

大人気バーガー屋があります。とてもおいしいですよ。これから、たぶんそこで食べに行くかも知りません。。。。とにかく、小さい町だけど、この懐かしい景色、親切な人がいっぱいで、この町が小さくても、まだ好きですよ。

I live in a small town. I was raised here. Since it is the sticks, there’s not much to do but if you have hobbies, it’s fine. We don’t have a mall, our movie theater is not that good. But, the traffic isn’t busy.

We do have a popular burger joint. It’s really good. After this, maybe I’ll go and eat there。。。

Anyway, it’s a small town but, this nostalgic scenery. The kind people that fill this town. This town may be small but I still like it.

あなたとは

少しも似てなんかない

あなた

This is a pronoun for “you”

とは

Depending on the situation, this particle can mean “and” or “with”. But when put together with は, is usually putting emphasis on the word prior to it. There are more meanings so let’s come back to this after looking at the whole title.

I’ll put “are” as a placeholder for now.

少しも

The kanji 少 means “few” or “little”. But when combined with も it puts on a negative meaning.少しも can mean “Not in the least”, “Not in the slightest”, “Not at all” or “Not a bit”. All of these can work for this word but I will go with “Not at all”.

So far, we have “You are not at all”

似て

This kanji 似 means things like “resemble” and “imitate”. It comes from the verb “to resemble” or “to look like”.

With this new info we could translate this as “You do not look like me at all” or “You do not resemble me at all”.

なんかない

When なんか is put toghether with ない it gives off an air of strong denial. This puts a more emotional spin on the “not”. Since we are dealing with a negative ending here, とは takes on a different meaning. Instead “are”, it’s “are not”.

So altogether we have, “You aren’t at all like me”. It’s a somewhat decent translation but it doesn’t give off that strong sense of denial. So perhaps, “You’re not me” (which strangely reminds me of this song.) would be better. But alas…

They did a wonderful job here. It gets the point across without leaving out the emotion behind the title.

This title comes from episode 2 of Magia Record Season 2. It is a spin-off from the lovely 魔法少女まどか★マギカ or Puella Magi Madoka Magica. This show is one of the few that I have watched both subbed and dubbed. In my opinion it’s a 10/10 anime.

Magia Record is adapted from a mobile game. Not really interested in gacha games (my wallet wouldn’t be able to take the damage) so I haven’t played it.

Girls making a single wish in order to become magical girls and protect their town. That is all I can say without giving away spoilers. If you want to dive head first into this series you can watch Madoka Magica. Not enough time? They have two compilation movies. They also have a third movie… and a fourth one coming out some time in the future.

Here are some PVs and a trailer if you are interested.

REI’S JOURNAL

Alright, saved the shamans on this floor. When I got to the stairs something called out to me. “Be Gone… Intruders…”. Eh?! It’s a ghost! It’s the real deal! I used the silph scope and the ghost appeared.

It’s a Marowak. Oh no… it’s Cubone’s mother. I tried running away but the ghost is still there. I don’t want to fight it. But if this is the only time she can rest in peace, I’ll do it!

Ikkokesei took it down in two turns. Thank goodness it calmed down and went to the afterlife. Inazuma is still freaked out. I went up the stairs and met the dumb duo again. Shikkokuha took down Meowth. Wait, did that thing just say “ow”. Maybe it was Meow. Choumu took down Arbok. And Kokuyougan took down Weezing.

Talked to an old man named Mr. Fuji. So he’s in charge of this tower. He came here to calm Marowak’s soul? I went to the old man’s house and he gave me a flute. Can it wake up Pokemon?! Well I know where I’m going next.

In conclusion, I hope that this series is helpful with your journey to learning Japanese and/or taking an interest in the country’s culture. Until then… また来週!
