Japanese Practice Week 51

Hello everyone! Kyuusei here to teach you Japanese and show what I find interesting about Japan. With that being said, let’s continue.

A new segment to the blog. From time to time, I plan on showing what I have translated from news articles. I rather keep it to subjects that I am interested in, so they won’t be too varied. Since the PS5 has come out (along with a new “Console War”) last week, I thought that this would be a great first entry. I also plan on giving a one liner to these articles in the subheading above. Perhaps this segment can be where I just discuss things in english (since there is so much Japanese to already learn from this blog, right?).

Now about my translation style. I try not to be so strict when it comes to translating articles. When I started translating, well, everything on here and other media (video games, anime, novels, manga.) I tended to (still do I guess) get caught up in having a literal translation from Japanese to english. So, now, starting with this article below, I try to make a looser translation that would flow better in english. Now I know how translators feel when they need to translate Japanese. Anyways, with this new occasional segment, I’ll hold my thoughts about the contents of the article after it.

Even though I translated this article, I still have much work to do. There’s no doubt that it can be better, but I will get better with practice. So without further ado, I’ll get into the contents of this article.

So, as you can see, it is another Console War between PS5 and Xbox. Sony vs Microsoft. Japan vs USA. I never owned an Xbox, but I have played on a 360 before. In regards to which one is better, I’m not too sure since I’ve always been a playstation kid (even though they left the PS Vita in the dust last year, still going to play games on it though). However, I am also in the same mindset as Initial D’s Takumi “If it has 4 wheels, I can drive it” or in my case “If its a video game console/handheld, I can play it”.

Anyway, as you can see in the article they rave on more about the PS5 than the Xbox. Which makes me curious. Is there a Xbox fanbase in Japan? I mean surely there is considering PlayStation has been a huge success in America. Shouldn’t it relatively be so for the Xbox in Japan? Not necessarily. I mean look how they praise the functionality of the PS5 controller and then focus on the Xbox’s fluid graphics.

Considering the PlayStation was made in Japan and this article discusses how functional the PS5 controller is. You could infer that gamers in Japan might prefer the overall functionality of a console over how good the game looks on a screen. Yes, visuals matter to some point, but if there isn’t much innovation on the system as a whole, then what makes the systems different from one another. Surely Xbox has more to show than just good visuals, right? The software is great and have more backwards compatibility from what I’ve heard. On top of that, Japan has other gaming companies such as Sega and Nintendo, making Japan a more experienced veteran at programming games for a console that they made themselves if that counts for anything.

So I got curious and watched this video about why the Xbox isn’t that popular in Japan. Take a look:

Buy hey, who knows maybe this time around, Xbox success in Japan may be different.

HIBIKI’S JOURNAL

Well the training arc went more or less well. Hanako grew a mustache, used a TM to have Kirinki learn Flamethrower, Kuroshima learned Poison Jab, and Hanabi was killed. Too bad Hanabi died when she fought a Boldore. What a waste. I don’t have that many Pokemon in the PC. Now I have to train Shutsuchi. So, we trained and returned to the Ultra Hole. Goodbye, Hanabi. (I’m really unlucky with flying type Pokemon. Or should I say, it’s the opposite.)

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is wL_9yjFqsAcpXExVdntF0_mSvg9oULcpfm-V0jZlZP9XlntebYMG1-fg2JUufoj8lKcwd2XaLetTmk84V_Yrl7nFOxxwWCNuUWlkaRQZz2-peveL9bBIPVlUADBvX07PRdFv5yiD

Ah, I just realized the rotom dex is asleep. That’s great. It can be a little annoying sometimes. We found Gazuma, but he tried to catch an ultra beast and failed. Now Gazuma thinks he is afraid of the Ultra Beasts but Lusamine isn’t afraid of them. Lillie and I moved forward. We found Lusmaine but, she is a little scary, and she said horrible things but Lillie showed courage. She yelled at her mother about how she really felt. However, Lusamine did not listen to her. Then, Lusamine and the Ultra Beast… fused?! You can do that?! Let’s go, everyone!

Why are her Pokemon glowing like trial Pokemon? That’s strange. Anyway, Hanako used volt switch and switched to Kuroshima. Kuroshima took out Clefable with a Poison Jab. Next was Mismagus. I switched to Biyako and used Darkest Lariat and took it down. Crap, she has  a Milotic! I’ll leave it to Kirinki’s leaf storm. Just a little more and we will win. This Bewear kept using Pain Split over and over and over. Such a pain. Plus, it’s defense is too high. I should use a hyper potion. After a few Psychic moves, we beat it. Last Pokemon is Lilligant, but Kirinki has a various move set so he can take it out, too. Phew we won! (I thought we would have to fight Lusamine herself next. Thank goodness that didn’t happen.)

Even so, we still have to deal with Lusamine. Lillie called for Lunala. Then Lunala turned Lusamine back to normal. In other words, she was no longer possessed by the Ultra Beasts. Suddenly the ground started shaking. Lunala then returned us back to our world. Hapu and Gazuma went to the hospital with Lusamine. So now that Nebby is a legendary pokemon, what does it want to do now? Of course you want to stay with us. Eh?! Wait a minute! Lillie, you want me to catch Nebby? Nebby, you too? Are you sure? Nebby should become your first Pokemon. If Nebby becomes your partner, battles would be very easy. But okay, we’re going to get Nebby.

In conclusion, I hope that this series is helpful with your journey to learning Japanese and/or taking an interest in the country’s culture. Until then…
